One of these days I'm gonna sit down and figure out how people use textures and brushes and all that jazz to make masterpieces like this. I suck.

depends on what program you use to paint or draw with. or what photo editing program for photography.
various programs use textures in different ways. im sure if you checked with some of the texture communities on devart youll find some good tutorials.
also try google cuz i know ive found some through that as well.

I use photoshop regularly, but I'm not so familiar with grunging things up. I've also never really drawn or painted directly in a program, from scratch. It would be interesting to try out, but not on my laptop's trackpad. No sir. I'll need to get a tablet or something. Thanks!

programs?
room 101 always works best.
i try every programs i can get my hands on.
i'm a sucker for web demos.
some are good for some things and some programs i like for other things, so, its like piece-work.
adobe photoshop is good.
jasc paint shop pro is good.
corel's painter is good,
-and i still have an old windows 95 corel photopaint that i whip out once in a while.
( i dont think they make it anymore except in their creative suite bundle, which means paying lots of money for stuff you might already have or dont need.)
a wacom is a good thing too.

there are also demos available to download at adobe and corel and jasc-
artrage has smaller programs that are downloadable and theres a new program that is open source that i havent tried yet that looks cool called paint.net its here- [link]
