Description I've been getting into the habit of very, very tight drawings in preparation for my paintings recently, but this one sort of took on a life of its own.

(the snake is not supposed to look that mean/threatening)

0.5mm mechanical pencil, 6"x8"

The snake looks graceful, though. *goggles* Pretty...

If the concept sketch is this excellent, I am certain that the painting would astonish beyond words.

I like how you're all "I ASSURE YOU I HATE DRAWING" and then you go and do this. Yeah, yeah, okay.

The technique and the atmosphere remind me a bit of Shaun Tan ("The Arrival," specifically), but only in the best way possible! It oozes Jenna most of all, of course (again, in the best way possible, I promise).

This one... turned into an exception. There were still parts I got irritated at having to draw, but drawing such an elegant pretty lady was enjoyable. (the background was a way to keep awake and engaged during class.)

:3 I like Shaun Tan and oozy Jenna comparisons...

This is so gorgeous <3

On a side note, how much lead did you have to use from that poor pencil to do all that shading? xD;

(also: SNAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKE <3333)

Haha, that's what I figured. xD I keep doing that too.
It really does look great though. I love the shading so much.

AHH. This is so cool. I love snakes. SNAKE.

I love your paintings but it's nice to see different stuff every once in awhile, too, so I always like when you post sketches and drawings and stuff. Looks great.

Snaaaaaaake~

Thank you x3. I'm getting more and more finished in my drawings, and many times there's something really different between the drawing and the painting, enough to make it worth putting up both.

I love this concept! And this totally shows how much your figure drawing has improved. There is something beautifully calm about this scene. I think I'd like to see a little higher contrast though (not much or it would ruin the fad into the background thing the figure does), but that could totally just be due to the digital translation. And I am totally jealous of your hand drawing ability, they're so perfectly real!

Thank you so much! And haha, yes... I can't believe I resisted photo reference for so long, because it really does make an astonishing amount of difference.

I'm so glad you like it (:. The hands were so fun!

(I actually bumped the contrast up a lot from the scan... I was a little hesitant to go up more.)

Photo references are a wonderful thing, they can remind you of what the human body is actually capable of. Scanning work is always challenging. Particularly with traditional work since a lot of what gives it depth in person is the subtle three-dimensionality of the materials that makes the darks darker and the lights lighter and colors more opulent. It's almost an art in itself to get everything looking just right.

Absolutely! And the fact of the matter is, I draw and paint exponentially better with close reference than without it.

I'm running into that problem pretty seriously with my paintings. ...which is why I bought a gross!expensive camera XD
