Description deadgirl is another one of those pieces that kind of ran away with itself and i just hung along for the ride. I was about halfway through it before I even realized she was dead. Oh well.

heres a hint: some people who look at her upside down, see a more angelic side of her....

You didn't know what you were drawing... That's like... Amazing... And you did that all with india ink... How long did it took you?! (sorry to ask a question that might have been asked already)
I looked at the picture upside down (I got curious), I see why some would say angelic... But to be honest, I think it's scary... Dead people tend to do that to me... hehe
Still a very good drawing!!
I just wonder... Who are the hands of?

Yeah, well, I never know exactly where my drawings will take me. LOL
They frequently seem to have minds of their own..
I do quite a few drawings in pen and ink. They take me about 12-18 hours, depending on the complexity. deadgirl took me about 9 hours, if I remember right.
The hands are her own, crossed on her chest....

I'm glad you like the piece...

Her own hands... Yeah, I figured that later... I did it with my own hands to see... hahaha
Anyway... Pen and ink seems so hard to do... What if you put too much ink on the pen and make spots, you know? I always have that... ><

skritch In reply to Eyes-S [2005-02-23 16:24:26 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, you have to be careful with india ink, lol. Mistakes happen and you just have to figure out how to work the accidents into the drawing.
And it forces you to be more careful, more accurate. Working in ink forces you to be a better artist.....

Eyes-S In reply to skritch [2005-02-23 16:27:08 +0000 UTC]

Exactly... You have to be able to work the mistakes in... I wonder now... Did you make any in this one? hehe
Maybe in the hair!! haha
I believe that... Be as precise as you can... That will make you a better artist.

skritch In reply to Eyes-S [2005-02-23 16:36:29 +0000 UTC]

No, no, no mistakes in this drawing... (innocently)

LOL, truth be told, virtually every drawing has an unexpected event happen (other people might refer to these as 'mistakes' ), but by the time I have completed the drawing, the 'mistakes' are part of the picture. So there you go.....

And, no, I am not going to tell you what the 'mistakes' are....

Eyes-S In reply to skritch [2005-02-23 16:42:01 +0000 UTC]

Ok! hahaha
But I get what you mean... The 'mistakes' become one with the drawing... I always hate it when I make a mistake... When I use a pencil, I always erase! Till there is practically nothing left of the drawing... hehe

your line work is just amazing. as with the future, i'm just gawking at the time and effort you must have put into this to make it so incredible. your cross-hatching is simply wonderful - you don't see too much of that these days - and it looks just out of an art textbook.

you should be very proud

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

reddiva In reply to reddiva [2005-02-04 10:34:20 +0000 UTC]

hehe cross-hatching seems to have gone out of vogue... but pen and ink isn't very popular either and u don't see many people who draw with pencil or charcoal using that kind of technique because they don't need to being a softer medium...

i just think it makes those of us who do use cross-hatching that little more special heehee... and certainly using this technique the way that you do makes your artwork stand out and be unique from all the others....

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

skritch In reply to reddiva [2005-02-03 15:44:21 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I noticed that too. Where has all the crosshatching gone? I don't see much work like mine anywhere.....

What a shame, as some really nice effects can be done with this technique.

Well, I'm glad that you liked deadgirl . I also really like this piece....

This is truly stunning. I love the way you manged to descibe her form using only light and shadows without actually drawing contour lines. Beautiful piece.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

skritch In reply to greysmith [2005-01-24 15:25:02 +0000 UTC]

Excellent observation, greysmith, on deadgirl . I tell people all the time to take a moment and actually notice if contour lines occur in real life.
Of course, the answer is that they don't. So then why do we put them in our artwork? Our world is one of tones, shades and colors. Unless you have a particular reason to use contour lines, dont. I tell them that their work will have greater impact and realism without them.

Ok, off the soapbox. LOL Thanks for your comments on deadgirl and I am glad that you liked it.

You have a particularly nice gallery yourself. I am planning on dropping by later with comments.

glad you thought it was a good observation and even more so that you liked my stuff, which, unfortunately, happens to be filled to the brim with contour lines. I did try working without contour lines for a few months 'cause my teacher insisted on it as a training excercise but i never managed to wean myself entirely from using them, and by now they're back in full swing, which is why i'm always surprised when someone manages to pull it off as skillfully as you do. Congrats on the piece and on the gallery, you've got some great images in here.

I love the way you get so much value from pen strokes. The neck muscles are perfect for her fallen position, and the shadows are great. I can never do shadows. I wish her eyes were a little more detailed, to focus on their blankess, and her arms don't seem to have fallen quite naturally, perhaps that's were you were going with the angel, i guess. Overall, an excellent piece. I am continuously pleasantly surprised by your art .

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

skritch In reply to feelinhungry [2005-01-21 15:39:09 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much for the comments on deadgirl . I'm glad that you feel the muscles worked well. I wanted to give her neck a tensed feeling and I think it was somewhat successful.

It is interesting that you mention her eyes. When I was originally drawing it, the eyes were blank and pretty much empty. I knew I didnt want to put a lot of detail in them because if I did, it would make them lively, defeating the purpose.... But when they were blank, they became a focal point of the drawing, bringing your eyes there. I didn't want that either, so I decided to place them in shadow, pushing them back.

The hands were placed on her chest in the classic funeral pose but one that could also be interpreted as being spiritual. I think that unnatural look of the hands may have more to do with the way they were drawn than the pose. I have never been truly happy with them either.....

ouch, i think i got head cramps, hehe. looking at her upside down, i do see a more angelic version of her, but as i turn, i can almost see her dying before my eyes, it's a VERY cool effect i lovethe contrasts in the piece as well, they really deliver the forlorn mood the piece gives off. i really like this one, the dark theme, the contrasting shades, it's right up my alley, hehe. very nice

amazing as usual, you are truly great at what you do.

upsidedown...ha...brillantely evil. However you are right it does look more heavenly upside down.

i dont think you should post the pictures as there being completed. It would just slow down the process and wouldnt be appreciated enough for the effort put into it.

You did see it on UNITED-ART. I put it up there about a week and a half ago to help promote the site. This is a little better scan of it, though. I am glad that you like it.

I am admit it gives me a morbid satisfaction to picture people trying to look at their monitors upside down, but it is a neat effect.

btw - D@mn, girl! you are doing pictures faster than I can comment on them! Either you have to slow down or I have to speed up. LOL Seriously, they are looking very nice and I can see the adjustments you are making. I will be by later today hopefully to give comments.

I think that's a great idea. One other pencil artist on DA does that, and i've learned a lot just by looking. too bad i forget who they are though... Every time i see a new drawing, i try to figure out how it was done, and where they started first. This is probably why I learned so fast, because everyone is my teacher without them knowing. But I havn't been able to teach myself anything from your work, and i don't know why. I just want to steal all your secrets!

You really stand up when you draw? I'm way too lazy for that.
i sit almost upside down in a big plaid chair and draw on 8x10inch paper. I havn't tried anything larger.

skritch In reply to jdnuts [2005-01-19 22:05:21 +0000 UTC]

Seriously though, I don't know if seeing the intermediate steps of my pieces will help you or not. I just figured that people seem interested in how I do things and the might find it interesting to "follow along" LOL

I have learned incredible amounts from other artists and how they do things, deconstructing their works, so I understand what you are saying. If I had to guess as to why you have not been able to learn from my stuff, it would be because of the complexity of it. It is hard to see what the individual components are. Hmmm, may be you could learn something from seeing the steps, after all. We'll see.

If you ever have any questions as to how I do something or opinion on anything, feel free to ask. I am not miserly when it comes to what I think.

Well we have totally different styles, so I mostly want to know out of curiosity even if I don't pick up anything from it. I'm sure I will eventually, but either way, out of all the artists i've looked at, your style is the most difficult to pick apart.

I have lots of questions
