's I thought I ought to draw Celestia the way I see her, drawing of course on :devEarthson9405:'s style. I'm more or less pleased with how it came out, though the scanner ate it.

In my idea of Celestia she has these shiny, pearlescent point feathers on her wings that are very, very pale shades of the same colors in her mane.

It bothers me so much when people are like "The princesses are just grown up and the rest are all babies". NOPE. Twilight, Fluttershy, Rainbow, Pinkie, Applejack, Rarity--they're. all. ADULTS. Rarity's SISTER is a baby. Well, child. THE MAIN SIX. are. grown. up. The way I explain the alicorns is like this; THEY'RE HORSES. All of the ponies, be they Earth, Pegasus or Unicorn, are PONIES. Like, shetland ponies, fell and dale ponies, connemara, that kind of PONY. The alicorns are HORSES. Like thoroughbred, Arab, akhal-Teke, Oldenburg. HORSES. HORSES vs PONIES. Hence their size.

Cadence and Twilight aren't as tall because they're not born alicorns. Cadence was born a pegasus and became an alicorn and was then adopted by Celestia, and Twilight became an alicorn as well. Neither of them are immortal--Lauren Faust has stated that Twilight is still mortal, because it was always her plan for Twi to become a princess, even though she's no longer on the show. Cadence and Twilight both gained their powers, but will not live forever, though they will live a fairly longer time than a normal pony. (And by fairly longer, I mean average pony makes it to 90, Cadence and Twilight will make it to about 120)

Alicorns are long and slim, with massive wings (as compared to a Pegasus pony) and long, slightly curved horns, and capable of much more magic than a unicorn; they also have lion-like tails. Immortal Alicorns are not born OR made but come to be...randomly. More on that later.

The changelings are another species entirely, not actually ponies. The ponies tell stories that a long time ago a group of ponies who manipulated the emotions of others were cursed by the old pony princesses and forced to live in the dark, feeding off of love. In truth, they're just a separate breed, though there may be some basis to the legend.

So here's my headcanon of how Celestia and Luna happened.

The Olden Pony Princesses:

Before Celestia and Luna, there was a council of immensely powerful immortal Alicorns, invulnerable to wound or age both (Celestia and Luna can both be killed, they just don't die of age) and they were, basically, gods. They were Nyx, Hemera/Eos, Aurora and Nyra.

Nyx was pure black, so black that she was basically a total void in the shape of an alicorn, and her mane and tail were literally made out of the cosmos of space itself, and it was said "when she spread her wings they blanketed the sky in night." In my headcanon she's not just the goddess of the night, but of space, time and eternity, and darkness, which is altogether a broader concept than just 'night'.

The next sister was Hemera/Eos. Eos had a body of pearly, pale silver-gold, and a mane and tail of sunrise, fading moonlight, fire and day, and her wings, when spread, shone rays of light down on her subjects. She was the goddess of not just the dawn, but the day as well, and light itself, and life and beauty. Where Nyx was cool, reserved and aloof, she was kind and motherly, and deeply attached to the ponies.

"Nyx and Hemera draw near and greet one another as they pass the great threshold of bronze: and while the one is about to go down into the house, the other comes out at the door."

The next sister was Aurora, and she's NOT got anything to do with the dawn. Aurora had a silver body and her mane and tail were made out of the Aurora Borealis, and her wings were clouds and rainbows--basically, she's the personification of the northern lights and the phenomenon that causes them, and rainbows, and all things sparkly and happy-happy-joy-joy on the earth. Aurora was light, carefree and sweet.

Nyra was the essence of strength itself, with mane and tail of "bronze light" and wings of "steel", and was headstrong, a lot like Rainbow Dash.

Then the darkness which Discord would later spring from rose to challenge the four sisters, and because Eos was so deeply connected to her ponies and the earth, each time they suffered she grew weak, until she started to fade from existence, and the sisters realized they were helpless without her.

Nyx quickly captured Eos's gentle, loving essence in a magic crystal and came up with a plan among her sisters. Nyra and Aurora flew to the opposite sides of the galaxy seeking the ones who would be able to defeat the darkness, because this was the gods' great flaw; they were not mortal. As odd as it sounded, because Eos was the only one truly in tune with the mortality of the ponies, the gods could not attain that utmost level of sacrifice and humanity, and anyway, without Eos they had little hope. Aurora and Nyra returned; Nyra had found no source purer or more gentle than the light of the moon in the darkness, and Aurora had found no substance stronger or brighter than that of the sun in the day. Nyra and Aurora were already fading, and Nyx quickly channeled their spirit into more magical gems. Then Nyx herself rose, and spread her wings so that she surrounded the earth with all of space so the darkness would be forever caught in her mane, and allowed her self to fade away, but not before putting a little of her immense magic into the last of the six crystals, and leaving a part of her spirit behind the guide those who were to come.

Eos gave us the elements of Honesty and Kindness.

Nyra gave us Loyalty.

Aurora gave us Laughter.

Nyx gave us Generosity and Magic.

Nyx then poured all the magic of her four sisters and the newly created Elements of Harmony into the creation of two new Immortal Alicorns...one born from the white light of the sun, the other from the cool light of the moon. Nyx placed the Elements in a great tree beneath the earth for the sisters to find when they were ready, and then she, too, faded. But of course when the Elements were created, they trapped and gave order to some of the darkness, but the rest spawned...Chaos. Discord took over Equestria, which was suffering badly,

Celestia and Luna were born. Luna was born with a light blue mane and tail and a periwinkle body, Celetsia, her elder, with a pale pink body and magenta mane and tail. After finding the tree, connected already to the Elements as they were, and successfully imprisoning Discord (being a god, he was too powerful to destroy) Celestia and Luna grew in power and were able to defeat King Sombra, but the cursed Crystal Empire was lost. But people began to reject Luna and favor Celestia, who got so caught up in the limelight that she did not notice Luna's pain and being rejected and overlooked, until it was too late and Luna had been corrupted into Nightmare Moon.

Luna drew on ancient texts and images of Nyx and stories of her power to form a being who represented what Luna longed to be. That darkness became Nightmare Moon, and as Luna fell deeper into depression, Nightmare Moon grew more and more powerful, until she was able to corrupt young Luna into refusing to lower the moon. Celestia had actually begun to realize what was going on, and that night when Luna went out to raise the moon, she had a bad feeling about it. When Nightmare Moon manifested before Luna in corporeal form, Luna was frightened and cried out for her big sister. Celestia flew as fast as she could, but failed to reach Luna in time. Luna looked no different, but was much changed in many other ways. When Celestia tried to bring Luna back home, Nightmare Moon and Luna truly became one, Luna took power from the creatures around her, transformed into the mare of darkness, and attacked Celestia.

Celestia was horrified by her sister's treachery and even more upset by her own ignorance to her baby sister's plight, blaming herself for turning a blind eye and being unable to save Luna in time. Celestia tried to help Luna many times, but Luna was too far gone in Nightmare Moon. When the ponies of equestria began to die for lack of the sun, freezing to death or starving, Celestia realized she had no choice; it was time to destroy Nightmare Moon...and if that meant her sister as well, she had a royal duty.

Celestia took the Elements of Harmony, and prayed that she could defeat Nightmare Moon and save Luna, and would not have to hurt her sister. Of course, Celestia only controlled Laughter, Loyalty and Generosity; Luna controlled Honesty, Kindness and Magic. Thus, Celestia could only banish Nightmare Moon. But when she turned the elements on her sister, tears in her eyes, her mane and tail swelled with the burgeoning power of the elements and became the flowing, gravity-defying do we know and love today.

Nightmare Moon was banished to the moon, Celestia hurtling out into space with her part of the way, and at the last minute NMM turned into a tearful Luna asking Celestia "Why?" Celestia almost lost her grip on the nightmare and let her go, but then--a massive black alicorn placed her hoof on Celestia's and helped her complete her mission, banishing Luna.

Nyx protected what was left of Luna inside Nightmare Moon's evil heart, singing to her songs of the night. Every night Celestia sang a lullaby to Luna and spoke to her sister as if she were there, sometimes even flying to the moon--but all she ever got in return was Nightmare Moon's vicious snapping at her. Sometimes, though, Luna would appear in Celestia's nightmares to save her...and that gave Celestia hope that her baby sister was still there somewhere in the darkness.

When Nightmare Moon's shell was broken off and only Luna remained, she was so drained in power that she had reverted to a filly in appearance and size, but she grew quickly, darkening in color and her mane and tail becoming similar to Celestia's. In her full power, Luna is as tall as Celestia, a darker blue-violet, and her mane and tail look like the night sky.
