Description Ok .. a couple of months ago i decided to make a Zelda fanart. So i thought about the dozens of images that were imprinted in my memory by playing all those games .. and it was a tough choice to decide which way to do.

Until i realized what the game was all about, and then my job was pretty easy.

I could have chosen a lot of different images ... could have done all those fancy images of combat, flashing things, blur, all that shit .. but i think this one, in it's simplicity, is much better to describe the game. If you take all the locations, all things Link does in all the games, it boils down to this.

Courage.

I remember the 1st time i played Ocarina of Time in christmas night on the year that it launched. I after a couple of hours exploring the village, figuring out what to do, i got into the 1st dungeon. And that is the image of the final boss of it.

Its that simple. You walk into Gohma's Lair, there's no sound besides your footsteps, all is dark and Navi (the fairy) is flying around, until you hear some "cracking sound" from something moving in the room .. you look around until you spot in the ceilling. It's jumps down in front of you .. stare down, Link unsheath his sword and tiny woden shield and get ready ... Navi ready to assist him.

This is pretty much what all games from the series are about. A kid (or young guy) simply moving foward by sheer courage to save someone, or everyone .. He's not the badass hero that nearly every game now has .. that kill legions of enemies.

He's just this:

A kid with his tiny sword and wooden shield.

And people wonder why i think they are the best series of all time ..

ps. The image is sharper on "download"

Uh oh. Oot was the first Zelda I played (although I didn`t play it past the first dungeon until years later), and Gohma was the first boss... The picture pretty much tells everything about the feeling I had that moment. Stunning work!

I was amazed to find more than 700 search results for the name Gohma. That said, your interpretation is one of the best I've seen, if not the best.

Dude... this is so incredible. This is probably the only image that I've ever seen for Zelda fan art where I felt that same feeling I had the first time I played it. I remember this battle was the first time the game hinted at the grand scale it contained, and how drastically it differed from the previous titles. Everything about the game was so dramatic and legendary. And nothing rivals that final battle with Ganon. (Just wish it had been harder.)

Seriously, man. This picture reminds me of the Lord of the Rings feel, and this is the light that the Zelda series deserves to be seen in. PLEASE do more of these! I'd love to see the battle with Volvagia or Ganon... or maybe Phantom Gannon... better yet, that picture from the dream Link has at the beginning, where he is standing before Ganondorf on his horse in front of Hyrule Castle the night Zelda flees.

Thats why I always like the Toon Link or Young Link better. I think it enfasise the "just a Little Kid vs Hell" concept so prominent on Zelda games.

EnkerZed In reply to ??? [2012-04-15 15:04:29 +0000 UTC]

now that... that is awesome and too bloody right. Link is no master swordsman or army slaying champion. he's not some veteran warrior who's lived through a lifetime of battle and knows every trick in the book. he's just a brave soul doing what needs to be done, using nothing but his own courage, wits and whatever helpful thing he can get his hands on... some credit has to go to Navi as well. even though she can't die in the game, she's still putting herself in as much, or even more, danger as Link to help him. can't get any more loyal than that.

I hate playing the very first boss, no matter how many times I do, because EVERY SINGLE TIME it FREAKS ME OUT when I look up and see her hanging there, watching you... EVERY. SINGLE. TIME!!! HATE HER SO MUCH!!

So theatrical! And epic! And yes, I completely agree with you on the theme of the entire series. When I see renditions like this, I'm reminded how freaking terrifying it would be to encounter any enemy from the Zelda universie in real life...

I especially like the details of the gooiness and webs on Gohma herself.

Only two words can describe this image; "Holy" and "sh-ie-te (shee-Ite)".

This is astounding, beautiful, well drawn, and really captures the feeling you get when you play a Legend of Zelda game that you're into. I remember when my dad started me on this series when I was 5-6 years old. Ocarina of Time was the first video game I ever saw, followed right after by Mario Bros 3, but I never connected with the Mario series like I did with the Zelda series. I always loved the 'realistic fantasy' to it. I don't know why, but Mario always seemed like a weird-ass dream to me, whereas Zelda seemed like something you might read about in a storybook or something. I've always loved this series, and now I'm a Zelda fanatic ^^ I have posters, almost all the games, manga, and so on. I'm not obsessive, but at the same time I am, if that makes sense.

Zelda overall do a really good job on passing the "emotion" that is happening in the scene. Either by sound, the way they present the enemies, etc.

So i tried my best to be on par of that

Oh wow, I love your explanation of your thoughts behind the image, you have summed up the way I felt when I first played Ocarina of Time, and yet I am the mother of two boys, aged 22 and 13 LOL! Yet I am addicted to Zelda, and they both grew up on the adventures. I never really thought about it before but yes - it is all about a young character overcoming adversity to save the good and innocence in others, through his COURAGE. So refreshing when compared to all the violent pointless shoot everything's head off for the hell of it stuff!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

krysdecker In reply to CanveySue [2011-12-06 13:24:57 +0000 UTC]

oh yeh .. i mean, i like the pointless shooting every now and then, it's great for the daily stress to blow up some things ... but the real games, are the ones like zelda, where even after all those years, i remember exactly every corner of it.
