Transformers: Animated-styled "Springer"This is a newly coloured version of my entry for the IDW fan-art forum's monthly art contest. The topic of last month was to take any TF character and design them as if they were in TF: Animated.
It was a tough battle, neck and neck right to the end, coming in second against the formidable Eric Allard and his Sixshot [link] piece. Which he'd better colour like NOW. :-P
This month's contest (hopefully I can get it done in time!) is to design a 6th Generation One Dinobot. Should be fun :-P

A commendable Animated-izing of the Autobot's top triple-changer. The head in particular looks very close to the hologram that appeared in one episode. You've got the style of the design down pat.

Glad ya like the head, funny enough that episode had never aired before i did this, so i'm lucky it turned out close enough by happenstance!

Yeah, the only thing that really bothers me about the design is that Springer doesn't have a weapon! One of the key aspects of Animated characters is that each Transformer has a totally unique weapon. This design just isn't complete unless Springer is wielding some sort of bazooka or nine-ringed saber or cat-o-nine tails, if you know what I mean.

LOL if I had thought about it I would have ended up with something far less exciting, probably his sword which only appeared in the movie for about 5 seconds never to be seen again, lol

Oh wow i love this more than any other TFA adaptation I've ever seen. Except for maybe my Shockwave one haha, but he's already in TFA, I just redesigned him to be more G1 based.

I agree, Springer (and in a way all the movie bots too) always felt like he was "separate" from the old school original pre-movie characters. He must be one of them!!!

It's ashame he wasn't in Animated. He's one of the most neglected characters in the entire TF franchise next to Rodimus Prime. And I already know what became of him in that show.

I agree. Springer is a good example of a pure soldier not just because of his colors and his vehicle forms, but also because of his personality; always loyal and faithful to those he values, and willing to sacrifice his life for them. With a guy like him as your friend, he'd break his back for you.
I have to admit that I'm one of the few fans out there who still sees value in the cast of characters who were introduced in the original 1986 movie after all this time. But it's ashame that nobody in the buisness values them. Those guys have been neglected for way too long now. The worst part of it is the chances of them being seen again in any TV show or theatrical films is unlikely. But we can at least dream about it.

I completely agree with you, the movie cast was great and it would be really nice to give them all some spotlight, wont happen, at best they'd be secondary characters, but we can dream!

So true. It's sad really because back then they were important and special. And they still are to at least some of the fans. But as fate would have it, nobody cares about these guys. At least nobody in the industry that is. But they've always had a special place in my heart for the past two decades since I've known them despite how often they are ignored and neglected.

Is it okay if I use this design in an artwork? I wanted to draw Springer/Arcee for one of my friends and she really liked this specific design. It's okay if you're not comfortable with that though, so don't feel pressured to give permission.

I love your take on animated springer, is there any chance of you re-doing him but with the actual animated head that derrick whyatt posted? and using more of the green colours from that head pic?
I ask because im commissioning a custom artist to make as many of the cyber ninja bots as possible, and i would consider the animated head on your designed body to be as good as it gets (no body was ever design for animated springer)
and with your permission i would love to do a custom of this?

Hey there! sorry about the long response time, I've been mostly away the past 2 weeks, extended vacation and a hellish return week to work, I've been spending the weekend slowly getting caught up on all my deviantART related stuff, lol
You can by all means use the body design for Springer, thats no problem at all! Unfortunately I dunno if I'd have the time any time soon to redo it with the proper head and colours, I've got a plate full of stuff that has to get wrapped up that I'm at risk of falling behind on (the extended, but very much needed vacation kinda did that, lol), but by all means if you can use both as references for the custom artist to put a proper one together using them, please do so, I'd be honoured for the body design to be used
And again, my apologies for the long response time, I'm normally much quicker here on dA, lol

Hello mate thanks for getting back to me,
Thankyou ever so much for letting me use this pic as the base for an awesome animated custom (you will be the first to see him when hes done) hey everybody needs time off take as much as you need (im counting down the days till i get my next week off, about 3 months time lol)
This springer custom wont be happening till summertime next year so there is no rush, i would love you to do the picture and im sure that somewhere down the line in the next year you might be able to find the time for a quick head swapp and colour change (seems only right that you should do it seeing as you created this fantastic take on springer) so theres no rush or pressure, i hope you consider this please, also did you have an alt mode in mind? earth or cybertron alt mode?

Oh, if I don't need to have it done until spring/summer, thats absolutely fine, I can swing it then 
I never really thought about an alt-mode, other than, following the story editors' rules, he wouldn't be a triple changer as apparently becoming a Triple Changer makes you go crazy (Blitzwing, lol) and he'd only have a ground vehicle mode as "Autobots don't fly" as Ratchet likes to say, lol. All I've really thought about so far. Probably something similar to his G1 car mode.
I did enjoy my time off, it was quite refreshing, and I feel a lit better mentally than I have in the past, so it's all good. Just a shame the vacation's over :-P

Im glad you have decided to have a go at incorprating the animated head and colour sceme into your fasntastic design, yeah there is no real rush march, april may will be fine
I just when your done that he will look wicked and make a kickass custom figure
Then you can sit back and look at him and think "this figure is based from my design" he will also be a one off, there will never be another one like him in the world (just like my animated grandus)

I dunno, I wish they would be, Roadbuster would be perfect after seeing him drawn so huge in the IDW comic series, he'd be a shoo-in for a stylized Animated redesign for sure!
