You say this picture is crappy? I've got one thing to say...THAT'S A LOAD OF BULL-****. (censored in case any little kids find this). This picture is awesome. The shading is very well done, and the fingers look alright to me. If you messed up at all, it's barely noticable. Excellent job.

This is beautifully rendered, you need not to ponder about that fact, lol. everything is in perfect proportion. The only thing as you've said is the hands. If possible I'd make more emphasis on the knuckles and tapering of each of the finger shanks. You are awesome at portraits as always.

I got bored and rushed the fingers; I know what;s wrong with them, but am unwilling to fix it. Plus, thw whole thing got totally wrecked from smudging, so it's all moot now anyway... but thanks, I do pride myself on my portraits. I spent alot of time practicing them

Yes, I think I agree with you... If I wasn't so lazy and worked on what I don't like about it (which is mostly the un-smooth shading) then it'd be much better... and the fingers are much nicer with shading. ^^

Well, I'm not. Well, I'm not _bad_, but I'm not awesome. Maybe with pencils, but not colour... And maybe maybe maybe with acrylic paint (when I have the patience), but not coloured pencils...

Well, acrylic is pretty controllable... At least, if you spend a long time on it and don't rush. Oil paint is horrible to try to work with. Or watercolour. I can't stand watercolour... Although when people know how to use it, it can look awesome. But I can't.

Yes, well, the right people can make anything look incredible, and also annoyingly easy. I have issues with pretty much all paint--actually all non-pencil related media, really. My mom wouldn't let me use messy things when I was younger, so I just got used to what I was allowed; pen or pencil. And pen is evil, so I went with pencil.
Though, from my minimal knowledge I understand that acrylic dries faster than oil, so I suppose oil would be the worse of the two. And watercolor is just... eck.

Acrylic dries very fast, so if you paint something wrong, you can always just paint over it again, which is pretty much impossible with oil paint. (Also, with oil paint, it's impossible to keep clean lines. It mixes was to easily.) I don't even want to go into watercolour.
Pen is evil, yeah. But then things you can do with it.... Damn, woman. Like that drawing of Sirius on the motorbike. Every time I see that, I just drool. At not at Sirius (well, him too) but the gorgeousness of the drawing.. It's just.. I could never do that with a pen... Not that I've tried, lately... Oh, I have... Did this at Christmas: [link] 'course, that's just bound to be crappy. Did it at Tim Horton's, and afterwards I gave it to that one guy I drew (Chris), so I only got to take a crappy pic of it with my cam (which I brought with me everywhere). Ohwell.

Yeah, the one thing about paint that does tempt me is that whole, being able to fix your mistakes thing. In colored pencil, once you screw up it's all over and all yuo can do is try to hide the mistake.
It depends on the kind of pen. I mean, all are evil, but in different ways. Ball-point is more flexible, you can draw lightly in it and even shade somewhat--but it's irregular and every so often with blob or go dry. Felt-tip is less random, but also less flexible, everything is always dark and heavy and the only kind of shading you can do is cross-hatching. Which you did very nicely in the pic of Chris, by thw way ^^ I like that picture.

Thanks. ^^ His proportions are off though, but it's hard to change once you've drawn it... And yes, I've tried different pens and stuff too. I like ball-point most, cuz I like flexibility. And if it blobs, you could always fix it on the computer. That's my motto. Fix it on the computer. (Well, no, actually, I've advertised rather widely that my motto is "RENT is love, and love is for sharing." lately -- I say it every time I send Rent stuff to anyone and they thank me for it.)
