Description Did this a while ago after finishing The Sable Quean, which is the first Redwall book in a few years not to be a terrible disappointment! C:

This guy made me grin so big when he first appeared. A warrior mole in my Redwall? Carrying a warhammer? Rad.

The mole that suffered from Bloodrath. Witch is odd, considering that only happens to Badger Lords.

Anyone else wish this guy had gotten his own spin off novel?

It would've been interesting & different to have a mole as the star character for once (even with the annoying accent)

He was! I know what you mean though about his footpaw always being injured. I love it that he gets the Bloodwrath though XD

Urgh...I didn't like this guy. I've always seen moles as the lovable digging type, not the warrior type. And picturing one as all muscly and buff just didn't sit well with me.

Kobb In reply to Taren14 [2011-05-09 01:48:56 +0000 UTC]

I think of moles as being a more peaceful Redwall equivalent of dwarves. They love their digging drink, and food, but they can be tough, stout little warriors when they're pressed. It was bothering me that every mole was the same mild, harmless character over and over. I've been wanting to see a warrior mole for quite a while. The warhammer was a great choice too - definitely the right kind of weapon for a mole.

I was only disappointed that he spent most of the book too injured to do much.

I thought The Sable Quean was a great story. Can't wait to read the next Redwall book. Hopefully it will be just as good.

I really enjoyed the Sable Quean, I'm glad it wasn't like Eulalia!. Only thing I didn't like was there was no lead up to Axtel, and he ends up a a pretty big character. I wish there was some intro to him before he gets wrapped in the plot. Also that other old hedgehog villain. Where the heck did he come from? xD It was such a good book, though. I'm rereading it now.
Great work on him! I love the highlights.

FINALLY! I just read his chapter. 's bout time the moles got a little respect! Shy, humble creatures, my ass! I knew they could kick ass when they wanted to! How much you wanna bet Mr. Jaques had been getting a lot of fan mail, begging him to make the moles a little tougher? Now all we need is vermin to carry the sword of Martin....HEY, IT COULD HAPPEN!!! Remember "The Bellmaker?"

... provided I can find it in the bookshops.

Warrior mole!

So Sable Quean was good, huh? That's good. I always pick up a hardcover copy when a new Redwall book comes out, but haven't gotten around to this one yet. Nice to know this one is at least a bit different than recent ones.

I really liked the new book, The Sable Quean. For once there was a difference between this and the other books. For a little while I was getting bored with the books. I was considering whether it would be worth my time to read the new book. I'm glad I did.
Axel was also one of my favorites in the book. ^^

I've been kinda disappointed with the series for almost the last decade, though I still read each one for the occasional interesting character/idea that stands out of the general blah. This one changed things up a bit - characters acting like they had brains instead of just following script. It was a pleasant surprise.

Sable Quean was very different -- Jaques threw in some twists on the usual formula. I just go it and read it a few weeks ago. Axtel was a lot of fun.

It really was. I found myself being constantly blown away at the sheer amount of thinking characters did, and intelligent decisions the protagonists kept making. It kinda highlighted how bad things had been getting, and was a real breath of fresh air.

Sean Rubin's illustrations didn't hurt any, either. c:

Makes you wonder what changed in Jacques' outlook? I know he had had some strokes a while back; I wonder if some of it was just cumulative recovery from that. I don't know. But yes, good book!

You never fail to blow my mind, especially with your Redwall art! I LOVE your take on him! Your style has changed that that seen in your older drawings of Redwall moles...or is it just modified to fit Axtel better? The detail in the warhammer is GREAT, and so are the leather wraps on his paws - a realistic and cool accent! The background is perfect for this piece, too - it blends with the colors without taking away from the character himself! Where did it come from? Another special notebook?

Sorry for the late reply! 8|

I'm glad you liked 'em, thankye! I haven't drawn a mole in ages, so it's quite likely my style has shifted. This was also based a bit on Sean Rubin's book illustration, because that depiction of Axtel was perfect.

As for the background, it's that same old scanned brownpaper page I keep using as a background, though this has been darkened up and color-corrected to fit it in just right. X)
