Kobb — On Patrol

Description Maybe more of a vermin-hunting party, as the Badger Lord is decked out in armor. The hare is probably a trusted lieutenant who, with his superior vision, is surveying the landscape.

Done over this recent Christmas break, (indirectly) inspired by some chapter updates from a very well-written Redwall fanfiction that I finally had time to catch up on.

This is gorgeous. The Badger Lord's armor looks like it would really be worn by one and I think you got the look of a patrol hare down perfectly. I love it, love it! ^^

What was the title of this fanfiction, may I ask?

Why would a Badger Lord be wearing armor in cold weather? Wouldn't it tear off his fur and skin after a while?

Kobb In reply to starlightdraik [2010-08-28 23:10:06 +0000 UTC]

That would only happen if he never took it off. But for a few days on patrol, it's a lot safer than going without.

True, true. I can't help but note the helpless expression on the hare and the anoyed look on the badger.

I've always loved the limited palate look; marker and white on toned paper is so neat.

*geeks!*

Wonderful! It's always great to see more Redwall art out there, especially of such high quality. Gotta love that cape!

I have to admit my favorite thing about this picture is the expression of the hare, however. It just tickled me! Great job. :3

I do, actually. Kinda wish "good" and "evil" weren't so clean cut, but given the audience Jacques prefers to write for, and that I'm about 12 years older than I was when I started reading the series, it's not neccesarily a strike against the books. I still love the world and plenty of the characters a whole lot.

Which is why they still invade my sketchbook from time to time. 8D

This is very well done...I like how you did the anatomy/the shape of their chests and legs. It's hard to draw animals as people, or at least it is in my opinion. I never see any Redwall fanart so thanks a lot! Oh, you said you were reading a good redwall fan fic, could you please send me the link or at least the name of the title/author? That'd be wonderful because I'm always up for a good read(especially when the story is actually worthwhile)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kobb In reply to ashleyjordan [2009-01-08 05:25:29 +0000 UTC]

I can do more than that. There is also a decent Redwall fanartist on dA (she bases her drawings on the style of the PBS cartoon, but does it better) that you may have fun looking at. It's cuter stuff, but since when is that a bad thing? --> ~cybercatmia

As for the fanfiction... the story actually relies on previous fanworks the author has done, so I'd advise that those be read first. And they're long - a couple are pretty much novel-length. But for people like me who (when I grew older) got tired of the lines between good and evil being so black and white... they're fantastic. A more mature look at the world, as it were.

The very first story is here: [link]

and the author profile is here: [link] (after you finish the first, I'd advise you sort the stories into "published" order and use that as a guide of what to read next.)

He'd probably hate that I'm sending you to poke through old stuff, but it's great and only gets better as it goes.

Kobb, you and I are both getting back into our Redwall groove. Makes me miss the Guild.

Did I mention that I looove the way you draw badgers? I think you hit the mark with this one.

Kobb In reply to Cheddarness8 [2009-01-08 05:26:27 +0000 UTC]

I think the fandom drove me away from badgers when I started roleplaying years ago... because nobody did it well. They actually are very fun to draw.

Orlifan [2009-01-07 22:08:23 +0000 UTC]

I love how muscular the hare looks! Usually I picture them as being really thin and lanky because of all the running Your Redwall art is brilliant and always encourages me to go back to the series. It's strangely difficult to get the new books in England for some reason, they used to be everywhere! Will persevere

Kobb In reply to Orlifan [2009-01-07 23:42:16 +0000 UTC]

Partially the "buff" look is due to me not making a distinct neck, in an attempt to make the design look more "animal." He is quite lanky otherwise, especially in the waist. Except for the legs, but I figure hares would be the beefiest there.

And thankyew. C:

Real nice detailing with the badger's clothing, and wonderful job again at capturing the species. That's one thing I admire about your style, how you mesh human and animal so well into an anthropomorphic form.

Cool to see more Redwall art from you. +fav'd

Well thankye, mate! I actually had another one that I haven't posted because I wanted to do some color work on it... definitely fun to draw some canon Redwall again. (this guy was actually conceived as Urthstripe, hence the spear)

Traxer [2009-01-07 21:38:38 +0000 UTC]

That's pretty dang sweet. Been a while since I've seen a proper badger lord with some utter coolness. The coloration helps. ^^ (And oddly enough, I might know of that mysterious fanfic...not certain, but maybe.)

And capes swirling in the wind remain classic, but so worth it. Pretty cool hare there too.

Kobb In reply to Traxer [2009-01-08 05:33:07 +0000 UTC]

Badgers don't tend to get a whole lot of love. Maybe it's because people (like me) have had bad experiences with terrible badger fan characters and disregard the whole species as being ridiculous and overpowered. Badgers are actually very intriguing as a species, given their strong sense of Right, Justice, and History... as well as an interesting spiritual connection (for lack of better explanation) that nobody except the occasional Redwall mouse seems to share.

Haha, capes. They are fun, it's true.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Traxer In reply to Kobb [2009-01-08 17:52:07 +0000 UTC]

Heh. I know of those characters. In fact, Project: SLAGAR, an old Redwall site, had some fanfics that spoofed all those characters rather fantastically well. (SUPERSTRIPE THE UNREALISTIC) Definitely worth a read for a bit of a snicker. [link]

Their characteristics in the series are quite endearing as compared to those avatars. They definitely add to the Redwall myths on the side.
