Prickle is Kousa's familiar.

Familiars:

All mature witches have familiars. Summoning a familiar is one of the earliest rituals that fledgeling witches learn. A familiar can be any animal. It does not have to be a real animal, and it is not uncommon for them to have features which their base animal does not have (i.e a duck with horns, a platypus with six feet ((platypillar)), a teddy bear with roses growing out of it). Animating a plushie is considered reanimation, and is taboo but not punished. Resurrecting the dead is illegal; a true undead familiar will land you in prison (big bad witch prison is located beneath an ocean so good luck getting out).

Familiars reflect the soul of their summoner, unless something went wrong during their summoning or there is a special case (i.e kitsune witches feel weird about having kitsune familiars, so it is unusual for a kitsune to have a fox familiar). True Witches typically have familiars with a lot of plant features.

Since Familiars reflect the soul of their summoner, they also function kind of like daemons from His Dark Materials. Not totally, but if people like each other then their familiars will also get along. Familiars do have minds of their own, so even if people are pretending to dislike each other, their familiars might purr and nuzzle one another, revealing their summoners’ true feelings. Familiars may also be physically affectionate with people that their summoner likes as well. Unlike in His Dark Materials, it is not considered taboo to touch somebody else’s familiar, as long as that familiar wants to be touched.

Familiars choose their own names. It is taboo for a familiar to be named after something other than a plant/ plant feature, but it is not unheard of. Typically, the familiars who choose taboo names are more rebellious in spirit, which reflects the true nature of their summoner.
