I wouldn't have interpreted as masturbation but... mayhap... when something is dying or scared of thus they cling onto (in this case literally) physical things or sensations. insecure or emotionally distraught partners often seek sex as a distraction.

I can barely click icons on a touch pad... regardless.
Have you ever played the game American McGee's Alice? There's a part of the game where you end up in a "skool" of harmless albeit horrendously insane children. It reminds me of them.
And in his right hand, if he's mastrabating, and a zombie, I'm going to say he's pulling out a "tip" for a waitress. Just saying.

Kudos for a very unusual piece of art and especially for the added complexity and dexterity of doing it via your laptop touch-pad. I actually removed mine from the devices list because every time I went to type I was brushing it and having to get the cursor and focus back on the thing I was typing now I use a USB mouse instead.
