I headcanon Kovu as a straight ally. Born in the Pride Lands during Scar’s reign, Kovu was later banished along with his mother, siblings, and the rest of Scar’s followers, who would have no choice but to call the barren lands known as the Outlands their home. As time went on, he would be trained to become a fierce fighter alongside his siblings under the supervision of their mother, Zira. His scar was received in combat rather than from a swipe from Zira (different AU). He would be a loyal follower of his mother until the battle of the prides, being the more favoured one of her sons.

After the Pride Landers and Outsiders were united, Kovu began to let down his walls and would discover a whole new take on his life, something Vitani had discovered before with the guidance of Kopa. And later, he would develop a friendship with Kiara, which would eventually become something more, but with some obstacles in the way.
