Oh, I like the style used for this. Very sharp, but not too clear-cut and cleverly shaded. It still looks like the original, but you're right; it shows a significant change in style. This has so much more personality to it.

I recently started using this particular style and am starting to try and develop it more. I used the same pose and such since I just wanted to start drawing right away and not have to think too much on a new pose, only fixing up proportions/anatomy and the such. I think this will be my 'draw each year' image to see how I've improve over time.

A good plan! It can be very encouraging to keep track of your own improvement. And this is a nice piece to pick for such a thing too; I wouldn't mind seeing this adorable bony face again X)
