Karkaros sighed as the sun set over the horizon. The Turtle Festival would be ending soon, and thank Balodius and every other God and his mother that it was. Soolee had been sulking all day when he had tried-- and failed-- several times to capture a turtle for her crazy scheme, and left her empty-handed with nothing more than a series of bites along his forelegs to show for their combined efforts.

"I thought you were big and strong, you know, and you could've gotten that turtle before, she was just a small one, but no, you've got such clumsy paws, it's no wonder you got bitten. But really, it's a good plan, and maybe next time the turtles come in we can get some, because then we'll always have eggs and turtles would be amazing with some training if we kept them in the aeries and we could trade them and everything and can you imagine the economy?"

Karkaros snorted, his ears flattening as he looked away and kept trudging toward the ocean. Supposedly, something amazing happened to the water at night. He hoped it would be enough to make up for the long and exhausting day he had spent entertaining the younger gryph.

"Well, I'm sorry you didn't get your turtles--"

"Or the eggs," Soolee chided.

"Yes, or the eggs, but--"

"Well, that's okay, it was a good try, and like I said, the turtles will be back and we can try again, and maybe next time I'll bring a rope, a good strong rope, and that way we can loop it around the turtles and it'll be a lot easier but you know you really should get some gloves or something so that your paws work better, maybe I should try to make something like that. It shouldn't be too hard, get some rough leather and maybe some sticks and stretch it out so, like, you have talons like me and then you can grab things and..."

Karkaros shook his beak slightly as she went on another ramble. He tuned her out for the most part, but he had to admit that she really did have some interesting ideas. Maybe not the most plausible ideas in the world, but certainly interesting. He couldn't deny that there was something special about her; even though she'd run him ragged all day long, it had at least gotten him a lot of eggs to eat and good exercise.

Plus, despite her never-ending stream-of-consciousness babbling, she was good company. She never made fun of his huge beak, despite pointing it out many times, and didn't seem to recall his embarrassing run-in with the Yappa, which was more than he could say for most of the other Twistoult youths.

He suddenly became aware of the silence around him. She had stopped talking.

"Ooo," she murmured.

He heard a sudden sloshing and quickly turned to look at her. She had just darted headlong into the surf, and a brilliant blue glow burst around her legs as she moved. He raised his brows in awe and amazement as, all along the shoreline, bursts of beautiful light erupted with every touch. It was amazing, to say the least.

"Karkaros, Kark-- Karkaros, look! I wonder-- I bet if we scooped some of this up, we could, we could maybe use it in the aeries so we could have more light than just firelight, you know and-- ha, look, you can draw with it! I wonder if maybe we could--"

He sighed and let his ears droop. Another crazy scheme was already hatching in that brilliant brain of hers, and he had a sinking feeling that he was going to be her "research assistant" once more. Not to mention the fact that she was now covered in seawater.

Oh, Balodius, what a day. What a gryphlet. What a world!

Karkaros and Soolee enjoying the nighttime shenanigans of the noctiluca bloom at the Turtle Festival!

So I don't really do night scenes like ever. I hope the colors are all right, and I hope you can actually see everything! I tried not to make it -too- dark.

Feedback on both story and artwork always appreciated!

Next year, Kark and Soolee, next year. Or, you know, they could always try to catch a baby turtle. Have to wait a couple decades for eggs though

Haha, I'm sure Soolee will think of this eventually and they'll both wind up smacking themselves xD

Thank you
Bioluminescent water really is quite awesome! It was super-fun to draw glowy effects, too xD

This reminds me of a place called Nehalem Beach in Oregon that my family visited when I was young. It was so magical because the water actually glowed green when you touched it at night! I haven't been there in over a decade, though; so I do not know if it still does that.

Oh, wow, that would be so cool to see in person! It really does sound like a magical place

I'm wow'd by the color palette and the great story. You really got the characters' personalities to come through both in the art and in the anecdote. Totally, totally awesome!

Thanks a bunch!

I really need to work more with limited palettes, but I'm glad the colors came out well in this one. Both these guys are just a lot of fun to write-- and to draw xD

Fucking perfect man, fucking perfect. You wrote her EXACTLY how she is. At some point, if I draw her roost, I'll have to add a bottle of luminescent seawater hanging from the ceiling.

Oh, goodness, I'm so happy I managed to get her right! She really is a lot of fun to write, that crazy little genius of yours.

Ha! That would be brilliant-- she should totally have some glowy seawater to go with all of her odds and ends!

Thanks again, and I'm very happy you like it

Haha, thank you! I have to admit, I would have basically the same reaction as Soolee if I ever saw noctiluca blooms in person-- that stuff is just too neat.

Then again, bioluminescent things in general just fascinate me all around-- it's just so cool that some things can produce their own light in response to all sorts of stimuli! /nerd

oooOOOoooooh love the water and sand! it's really fun to be on a beach at night. looks alot like that. I also like how you kept the horizon line blurry and just put stars in to show us there was a sky. and again awesome expressions with the characters.

khyterra In reply to Rainroad [2011-08-20 02:59:08 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much! It was certainly a challenge to do the water and sand to make it look decent-- I've never done water before, really XD

I'm glad the blurry horizon line worked for this, I always have trouble figuring out exactly where the horizon line should go, and I figured that, at night time, it would be really hard to tell the difference between earth and sky anyway, so I kind of fudged it lolol

Thanks again
