Description For ~Zeimyth 's Christmas present, I made him a personalized tutorial and a drawing of his character all at once.

Speedpaint Tutorial: [link]
I'm not a great artist and my voice sounds silly, but I hope this is helpful to at least a few people.

This is the painting I showed when talking about scales: [link] It's a really good example of what I was trying to do towards the end with the scales.

I feel the same about drawing in every single scale - it's way too time consuming. I like the way you did subtle suggestions of the scales for this one. Great tutorial!

I used to draw each scale individually and the saddest part was that the results were terrible! Honestly, I would say there's a point when the time spent on a picture outweighs the result. Like a "diminishing returns" kind of principle. Like watercolor painting. After so many hours, it's done. Literally. You cannot add any more paint.
I should do more watercolors.
Anyway, thanks. xD

I can understand that. I used to put too much detail all in the wrong places in my drawings with the same result.

xD Well, I suppose watercolors are a good way to work on your timing. There's also pictures that need more time though too and others where you do most of it take a little time away and then finish it and they still turn out great

You're quite welcome!

It's part of learning, at least.

Watercolors are actually a good place to practice speedpainting. A lot of techniques require you to finish before the paint dries, and of course there's your brushes: you can't let the paint dry cuz it ruins the bristles, but you also can't leave the brush in water cuz it ruins the glue. It's the ultimate test of time balance, imho. If the materials weren't so expensive, I'd tell everyone to practice with watercolor.

At least the "not enough time spent" pictures can be fixed with more time. The "time sink" pictures are problematic. Can't get back lost time.

Yep

I remember I was pretty quick with it in high school but I wasn't a great watercolor artist. I just hate taking forever with a piece even though with circumstances sometimes like with my current requests they're taking forever

True. Maybe it's a matter of learning to recognize when a picture is a "time sink" picture and just do a few details and let the rest of it be messy/sketchy? People seem to like some of those sometimes. I'll get work I haven't spent much time on get more comments and such than work I put a lot more time into and imo they look better get less. Booo.

I've already said this a few times, but thanks so much for doing this speedpaint and tutorial for me. I think it's going to help me a ton! I still have a lot to learn, but you've given me several great pointers that I'm really excited to put to practice. I'll let you know when I've had a chance to try the things you showed me today so you can see what I've done with it. I might have more questions after that, who knows? XD

Also, Zephyr looks awesome in your style. I thought your choice of colors was interesting at first, but the whole thing looks very realistic. Much less cartoony than he's been depicted in the past. Speedpaint technique aside, you have an excellent sense of color.

You're very welcome. I'm excited to see what you create next. And if you ever think of any more questions, feel free to ask.

Thank you. The colors look weird at first because I start with highlights and shadows, and then the "midtone" forms from merging those colors. That's what I was trying to say before about not starting with a flat color. And it creates that realistic look, and you don't waste your time putting down a color that's gonna get shaded over.
(A while back, I used to waste a lot of time doing just that. I'd start with a layer for my flat color, color it in, then make a layer for my shadows and then shade it in, then make a layer for highlights and then draw in my highlights... it took a long time and in the end I'd end up with a flat drawing. If I were to draw this head in my old style, it's take two or three times longer.)

Well, I put together this: [link] and it's not very good. But, then, I'm not very good, so it makes sense. I'll get better.

From what I saw looking back at the stream, it kinda seemed like you started with the highlights and then went into the midtones, and then did the shadows after. Or maybe you did the shadows and then just came back and made them more defined. Either way, I like the effect more. I don't usually use a bunch of different shades while drawing because it's so hard to chose the right one, but from what I can see from this drawing the results are worth the extra effort. I mean, it's partly a style thing - obviously laying down a color and shading over it looks okay for cell shading - but for a more realistic painterly effect your way makes a lot more sense.

One of the main problems I ran into with my drawing I just did was getting a dark color. Sometimes I thought I had a great shadow color and it was too much of a midtone for what I was going for. Or maybe I just had the contrast all wrong in my drawing. XD
