The face reminds me of a goblin shark extremely. If I might say I'm guessing that's where the mouth concept came from?

Kinda, based off a photo of a deep sea shark caught by a Russian fisherman, the face looked kinda like a goblin shark but not exactly.

Freaky! All the ragged mats and tendrils on it give it a true "sea creature" look about it, like it'd smell really bad if you got it out of the water. It's a good thing; makes it more menacing!
Is that projection on its face a snout, or more like an Alien-style second mouth?

Hey thanks, the top shape is a boney protrusion and it works like the melon of toothed whales. then you have normal jaws, and to add a bit of a mutated or fantasy feel it has a second, useless lower jaw. Makes for a more interesting silhouette.
