The man of steel has been in my head for the last couple days, the news about the new movie bugging me more and more (Do we really need to see Zod as the bad guy again?), the Smallvile series (Yes I’m I fan, stuck through the good and the bad for 10 years!)finale trailers getting me psyched, and I’ve had the soundtracks from the original movie and Superman Returns on a steady rotation on my media players. So it only seemed appropriate that I do up a brand new Superman picture. It’s been awhile since I did a full color pic of him, about 4 years actually. Anyway, here it is and per usual this was drawn on marker paper, colored in Photoshop, and the background was done using Daz3D and Photoshop.Related content

Awesome work. I can't stand Smallville in the latter seasons though. Should have stopped at season 5. It jumped the shark and Clark whined for most of it.
I really like Henry Cavill in the suit and he's a way better actor than Welling and hope to god this time we can see a Superman worth getting excited for!!!

Thank you very much! I agree I think Smallville did go on way longer than it should have, but there were some really good episodes in the mess of bad ones. I'm not sold on the Cavill Superman yet. I personally think the new suit is kind of crappy looking and as for Cavill himself he does look the part but not too familiar with his acting chops. Like you I do hope this one will be good but Zack Snyder worries me, not looking forward to another retelling of his origin, and seriously Zod? Come on bring on Darkseid! Still got my fingers crossed.

Thanks, I kinda noticed the Welling-ish look to him after I finished, but the resemblances are purely coincidental I was just drawing Superman.

i'm a huge fan of Superman, and smallville, and i love this pic, the movement and blur of his cape is superb, and the look on his face makes it look like he means business, (which i love) a very difficult pose and you've pulled it off really well, good one man

Fantastic job! It's actually the little things that impress me most with this picture. namely the subtle pinkish shading of his lips and the detail on his fingernails. I don't knormally see that even in professional images. Excellent job!

Thank you very much! The lip coloring was something I normally don't do especially on male characters, but with is face so much in the foreground the normal solid coloring looked weird to me. So I added the slight pink to the lips and it seemed more natural.

Both the Superman figure and the background are greatly done but I think that they don't match together really good. One is quite realistic with deep shadows and muffled colors while the other is classical comic drawing and coloring.
There are also few minor things on Superman which maybe should be done differently (like a shading of face) but other than that it is a perfect work.
You've done it pretty well. Could be a cover for comic.

Thanks! Well for the character and background contrast believe it or not its intentional. I've always been of fan of traditional 2D animation, and when you look at the painted backgrounds, especially Disney- they are always extremely detailed and have great depth to them compared to the cel art. That's how I wanted to get my art to sort of resemble. So when I started creating 3D images as my backgrounds, I was able to get a look similar to that style. As for this one, the background is muffled do to the atmospheric perspective, and the shading on Superman's head probably is off. The way I was thinking about it was, with the sun technically behind him it's still high in the sky, so if his head is looking up toward the sky, the light would hit his face more directly then the rest of the body. It made sense to me when I was doing it at least!
