Description Because if Marco is my obsession, then Ace is my lesser obsession. I'm sorry. I couldn't come up with any better title.

LALALALA~ Happy belated birthday, Portgas D. Ace. I’m sorry I’m late. I got lost.

Okay, I tell a lie, I started this because I was happy with how Marco turned out here: and then I remembered it was Ace’s birthday on the 1st, so I figured I could kill two birds with one stone if I made it Ace’s birthday present.

So, cel-shading again, because it’s awesome. My sister reckons it looks weird, but who cares about her? I like his hair, and I like the flame in his hand even though it was a complete experiment… might have do so some other stuff like that. I don’t like his body- I couldn’t figure out how to shade it so I just made it all up as I went along~ Good tactic, that.

Background is cheap ten-minute fire- basically a load of squiggles, then I went back over it with pale yellow to make some flames that looked semi-awesome. I’m such a budget artist…

And I wish my sister would actually tell me why something looks wrong to her, not just say, ‘oh, I hate to say it, but that looks weird…’ If I can’t see why it looks weird, then I’M NOT GONNA BE ABLE TO FIX IT, CHAZZY! You gotta tell me these things, ‘cause Kem is not overendowed in the brains department.

Other experimental victims--

Portgas D. Ace belongs to himself (and to Oda too, I suppose)…

I love how , the accusing, has not faced the accused here XD! You sibs make me laugh so much!!!

I think the cel shading was a big victory again! And especially on his body! As far as I'm concerned, that's where the shadows would be if the flame is in his hand... The hand, by the way, is so excellent, I can rarely get that awesome line in the wrist to come out, but you totally did, plus distinguished the finger joints, PLUS shaded it all epic. Speaking of epic... THE FLAMES!!!

You may be a budget artist, but it doesn't show! I think your work always looks clean and well put together. Even if it doesn't take you hours, I can't tell the difference!

*envies shiny hair skills*

Ah! You make me question my choice of brother!!! *woe of a good looking woman who can have whoever she wants EXCEPT THE KID (yes, CHILD) SHE FELL IN LOVE WITH* (still shamelessly ships a couple with a MUCH larger age difference)

Yes, siblings can make for some funny times sometimes~

A long time ago now, I used to suck at drawing hands so badly, I’d always without fail try to hide them somewhere in draping clothes or in pockets or sleeves. Then I got tired of my mom asking “But where’s her hands?” and spent a few days sketching my own hands and the hands of the skeleton in the art resource room at school whenever I had a bit of free time. After that, I discovered how hands go, and now I absolutely LOVE drawing ‘em. ^^ *end story* The line in the wrist still gives me a bit of trouble now and again though- sometimes it would be there, sometimes it wouldn’t, and I always get those times mixed up…

As for being a budget artist, my sister pointed out a while ago that it’s not necessarily a bad thing- after all, my favourite brand of fizzy drink is actually called ‘Budget’. I just have to remember that….

Oh, so you’re the creeper who’s after my little brother! Kinda wasting your time there, aren’t ya?

ACE He looks so cute here, I love the fire in his hand. That can be a real bitch to pull off XD I wish I had something helpful to say concerning cell shading, but generally I just make it up as I go along too. I just mess around until it looks right, or grab a screen shot to see where they're putting the shadows. Although usually anime shading is minimal, LOL.

Hehe, thanks!♥ RE: cel-shading, making it up as you do along seems like it works pretty decently for you... so maybe I'll just keep doing that too.

FFFFFFFFFF he looks great I especially like the fact that you gave the string on his hat a drop-shadow. >W<

The only thing I'd be able to say is that I didn't see any highlights on his skin. Not sure if you really need them, but it's OK. ^-^ I think he still looks awesome in your style~

Kemmasandi In reply to Guitarheroineno1 [2011-01-04 23:13:25 +0000 UTC]

Well, it just looked wrong without the shadow, so I added that in there too... ♥

I actually tried giving his skin highlights, but they looked weird so I took them out. If I can master making the base colour and shadow layers gradiented, hopefully that'll make highlights a bit less needed...

Guitarheroineno1 In reply to Kemmasandi [2011-01-04 23:14:49 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, the highlights wouldn't have seemed that necessary anyhow. ^-^

So you finished it, heehee (^_^) Well done! I always have trouble making Ace's muscles (his abs especially are my nightmare... -_-") so I understand how you feel, having trouble shading him...

About your sister and the weird part, hum... I'll ask my brother since he's always the one telling me my drawings are weird... *5 mins later* Okay, well, my brother also said it looked a bit off because of the light&shadows effect, basically, it seems Ace's torso looks flat to him because there isn't enough contrast and reflief on his abs (which are near the flame so supposed to be more contrasted and shaded...) and pectorals (which are farther so the shades should be more spread...) Hum... he might have a point, but I won't tell him, lol... ^_^"

Overall, I really like his expression and the flame and background (despite you saying it looks cheap, lol...) and I'm jealous about how you make the hair... maybe I should look for some cell-shading tutorial, it looks awesome

Kemmasandi In reply to TenshiNoFuu [2011-01-04 23:11:20 +0000 UTC]

Yup! Only four days late. Yeah, masculine musculature is a nightmare to cel-shade- much easier to just paint, or shade with pencils…

I love your brother right now. He’s right! Oh, I love it when people actually tell me what’s wrong… it doesn’t happen a lot, and it can be frustrating. Tell your brother I said thanks!

Aww, thanks!♥ His hair is actually dead simple- the base coat of colour was that mid-brown. To make the darker shade I chose a really dark red at about 20% opacity, then went over the brown with it, and that gave me that dark shade. Same process with the highlights, only I used pale orange, and then the pale lines over the top were the same, only with a really pale yellow. I’m not sure if there are any tutorials showing this method- I just pulled it out of thin air the first time I used it.

TenshiNoFuu In reply to Kemmasandi [2011-01-05 09:22:04 +0000 UTC]

Well, the annoying part about my brother is that he's never really wrong but he has always a very non-diplomatic way of putting things, lol I'm happy you like getting feedback, though...

And for Ace's hair, do you think this method would also work for black-hair, sicne I always do his hair black?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kemmasandi In reply to TenshiNoFuu [2011-01-05 22:42:41 +0000 UTC]

Ah, I see- my sister tries to be diplomatic, on the other hand, but fails. I love feedback! I hardly ever get it- well, the meaningful feedback anyway.

Yeah, it should. Depending on the light, you'd just change the colour of the shadows and highlights- like in a fiery light, using red-orange and yellow, and under moonlight, perhaps using blue? I was actually meaning to try and make Ace's hair black, but it turned out looking more brown. I think I went overboard with the reddish tint...

I have no problem with cold light (in the night or water) but I suck for fire -_-" so when it's a warm tone, I use the preset tool on Photoshop for the lightning and it gives me the tones (it's bad to cheat, I know... sorry sorry...)

Kemmasandi In reply to TenshiNoFuu [2011-01-06 00:18:27 +0000 UTC]

Heeey, don't apologise for cheating! Cheating is a lot easier than doing it the hard way. Although, if you don't wanna cheat, try making a few different copies of a deviation and doing the lighting with lots of different tones, one for each copy, and see how it works out that was. I did one of those a while ago, and it gave me a great idea of how to pick the tones.
