Description For Remembrance Day
Are poppies a symbol of remembrance in other countries, too? Do you wear them above your heart on November 11th? Or is it just a Canadian thing?
How about the poem "In Flanders Fields"? I know in English Canada, it's almost always a staple of the ceremonies.

I wanted to draw this last year, but wasn't confident in my abilities haha... I since also found an excellent reference in shadow of death , which was pretty much the exact pose I was looking for and really helped visualize it
I'm always so nervous when I draw more "serious" artwork ;w;
Have a good Remembrance Day weekend, everyone!

yeah, poppies are symbolism for Remembrance in Australia too,
Do you guys wear purple poppies for the animals that were lost too?

Thanks for the comment! It's always neat to hear that we share similar customs
I have never heard of wearing purple poppies before, though! That's super cool!! Maybe Canada should start doing that as well

Yeah ^^ I love studying history and learning about other countries and I was so happy to see people pay respects to those fallen, even though not from Australia. Those great men and women sure are inspiring! Though I think it's the light horse for the purple popies, but it's for all animals, so hopefully other countries will recognize their animals, it sure effected them too... sorry for rambling XD

Hey man, no problem on the rambling!
It's always neat to hear what people have to say, especially when they're from all the way across the world! Neat stuff!

On a serious note, I really like the poem in Flander's Fields. I discovered it through Hetalia. And I think holding a poppy over your heart is just a Canadian thing. As an America, I never heard of the tradition until now. It's a great tradition in my opinion.

I like In Flanders Fields, too!
I've gathered from the various responses that it's actually a Commonwealth thing!
Makes sense, I suppose. Those countries are pretty tight-knit, especially in the time of the World Wars.

Thank you so much for the lovely comment!

Remembrance Day is observed by most commonwealth countries, my fellow Canadian~ So in the UK they definitely wear poppies -v-b I wanted to draw something this year too but I got too busy ;v;

Good job on the flowers, poppies are pretty hard to draw but you nail them, plus so many of them too! Lovely colouring and I like how you added the dog tags as well

Thank you! I had begun to string it together as a Commonwealth thing haha~!
It seems like the others use In Flanders Fields as well! Isn't that cool? Canadian content!

Thanks so much for the compliments! Poppies are really hard to draw ;-;

OH MY GOODNESS!!!!! OH MY  GOODNESSS!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWW!!! You achieve sooo much emotion and narrative in this I can't even describe how brilliant this is!!! The details, effects and impact of it is just amazing!!! The colours are spectacular and gee the overall drawing is beyond incredible!!!!
Canada looks SOOOOOOOOO AMAZING HERE!!! The way his hair fans out onto the bed of roses is incredible and the hair effects shadows and highlights there have that air brushed style you perfected sooo beautifully (also haha you've gotten sooo professional at drawing him, anything you draw with him looks incredible!!) The details and techniques in the rest of his outfit blend perfectly and the addition of the military tags is soooo stunning!!! (And wow, the shines there are sooo good, make them look metal but also rusted and worn out?) The definition on his face is sooo amazing I can't describe how handsome he looks here like OH MY GOODNESS HE'S SO HANDSOME!!! I love the open mouth here as well!! THE DETAILS IN THOSE POPPIES!!! Of my goodness, the consistency and level of intricacy in them is phenomenal and I love the shading and colour on them, so vibrant and varied as well in both shadows and highlights!!! They flood the composition beautifully and really emphasise the heart of the piece!! The way you've set out the poppies throughout really draws your eyes throughout the entire composition and straight to the bunch resting in Canada's hands!! The way you have some overlap Canada makes him blend in with the flowers and make them seem together in the same composition. I literearly cannot say enough but how beautifully the flower arrangement and design is here it spectacular brings out the core of your piece!! The central symmetrical structure works incredibly throughout and Its really strong and impactful, however that subtle shadow you have running across Canda's right hand shoulder really breaks the syymetrical lending it to a great sense of dynamic visual impact and design!!! YOU HAVE MASTERED LIGHTING AND ATMOSPHERE HERE THE PIECE JUST IS VISUAL EYE CANDY!!!

Haha!! You're serious pieces are sooo incredible and are getting Add to dictionary stunning!!! AHHHHHH!!! I love this one soooo much!!!! Defiantly one of my personal favourites of yours so far!!!!! AWESOMOMESS!!!!
(Also did I mention how handsome Canada looks!? Cause he's sooo handsome here!!!)

Oh and yes, Poppies are also a symbol for rememberance day here in Australia and we also wear them above our hearts!! And "In Flanders Fields" Is how most of our ceremonies open.

Haha it did take a long time ;w;

That's really odd, I didn't realize that it was only a Canadian thing!
The poem is a very important part of Remembrance Day here, and poppies are laid all over the country.

GraphiteNotes [2016-11-12 14:41:22 +0000 UTC]

This is absolutely stunning, I love the shading!
I don't now about the rest of the US, but at the schools I've been to we mentioned the poppies a few times and read the poem one year, but otherwise we just had a moment of silence at 11 a.m. and had assemblies to honor veterans while wearing red, white, and blue.

keltii-tea In reply to GraphiteNotes [2016-11-12 23:25:11 +0000 UTC]

Sound pretty similar to what we do here! (Minus the colours ;D We usually go black, with the bright red poppies on our hearts.)
It's also called Remembrance Day, and the focus isn't only on veterans, but also everyone whose lives were affected by war. Civilians, doctors, peacekeepers, etc...
You read the poem? Really? Cool! It was written by a Canadian during the First World War! I'm glad to hear that you have heard it!

Thank you!

GraphiteNotes In reply to keltii-tea [2016-11-13 14:45:19 +0000 UTC]

Oh cool (I'm not surprised about the colors, haha)! Here we only really celebrate veterans, but I think it is a very good idea to focus on everyone affected.
Yeah, I read it a few years ago, and it really is beautiful.

You're welcome!

Beautiful drawing
About the poppies, here in France I don't think they represent such a thing... But I can be wrong, I don't know a lot about this kind of things.
I remember singing the Ode to Joy every 11th of November with my class when I was in primary school

keltii-tea In reply to AnormalADN [2016-11-12 23:21:32 +0000 UTC]

I see, so they aren't used in France!
Thanks for letting me know! I was really curious as to whether or not they were used in other countries!

Ode to Joy is a beautiful song. I don't think it's used much here on November 11th, but I have seen Amazing Grace used!

Thank you!

So... amazing... how...
And I heard the poem In Flander's Fields last year on Veteran's Day (you call it Remembrance Day? Cool!) And it's not a huge thing to wear Poppies in America (at least, I don't think it is), but some people do anyways. But wow... I always knew your art was amazing, but this blows the others out of the water! The shading, the expression, the flowers... it's all perfect!

keltii-tea In reply to HanaoKiku [2016-11-12 23:19:28 +0000 UTC]

Aww thank so much!

Yes, we call it Remembrance Day. I forgot it went by a different name in the States!
Ah, so poppies aren't as big there. Do you decorate memorials with them? How about the wreaths? Do they have poppies on them?
Interesting to hear of the differences!
