Description LA Zoo, day 2... Profile of the Maned Wolf.

"My goodness, what big ears you've got Grandma"...

here's another view

Some information: In spite of its appearance and name, it is not a fox, nor a wolf.
The Maned Wolf, native to South America is actually the only known surviving member of the Chrysocyon genus and is not closely related to any living canid.
One suggested explanation for this is that the Maned Wolf is a lone survivor of the Pleistocene extinction which wiped out all of its close relatives and other canids from South America.
A study published in 2003 placed the Maned Wolf together with the extinct Falklands Island wolf (also not a true wolf, it became extinct in 1876) based on morphology. The study also suggested an affinity with the pseudo-foxes of the genus Pseudalopex. A genetic study published in 2009 confirmed the link with the Falklands Island wolf and suggested that they shared a common ancestor around six million years ago.
Sadly, they are endangered.

They are stunning creatures! I recently learned this: In spite of its appearance and name, it is not a fox, nor a wolf.

It is now endangered in many areas.

I did not know they weren't closely related to other canids O.o
This is very intersting information~
Although, it's sad that they are endangered. (like countless others)
They are so beautiful ;A;

It's really cool and really creepy because of how there's only tiny dots of red in its eyes instead of it having full-on red eye. Nice shot!

they are very beautiful! I don't know anything about their nature in comparison to the more standard north american wolf - but I sure like looking at them

Somber0wl In reply to kayaksailor [2009-12-11 22:16:08 +0000 UTC]

actually, they are not related to wolves other then being in the canine family. they are not wolves at all.

kayaksailor In reply to Somber0wl [2009-12-11 22:36:16 +0000 UTC]

I hate how the common names make assumptions like that (like sea stars are called starfish - they sure AREN'T fish)!

What are they more closely related to - foxes, coyotes, regular "domestic" dogs?
