Description Morning sun light illuminates a mule deer's ears...she's enjoying the spring grass and wildflowers.

Indeed! I don't even mind hearing them walking by at night ... tromp, tromp, crunch...

If you know what's out there you get used hearing them walking around I guess?

kayaksailor In reply to Lentekriebel [2009-09-04 22:22:58 +0000 UTC]

that is very true! At our old home my daughter was on the second story so never minded all the critters that walked around on the ground, now she's on the ground floor and is very paranoid about "what's that"?!!?! And we've got many more creatures here...she's got her own little separate house (a grannie flat - small bedroom, sitting room and bathroom) that is away from our main house and she has one of our cats that has adopted her space...this cat will occationally get all floofed up - and make the most awful sounds of course that doesn't help my daughter's fears ... poor child... she'll be 20 in November so not really a child...

Lentekriebel In reply to kayaksailor [2009-09-05 12:59:32 +0000 UTC]

That must be great for her, living apart but still close enough if needed or if she gets too scared. She will get used to the sounds after a while. And it can help you as a parent to let go. Or daughter lived with us in the same house till she was 27 before she left to live on her own. A big difference and not easy. Your daughter is 20, enjoy it while you can.

A cat that makes awful sounds, sounds funny!! Maybe it’s that time of the year that cats go out to mate. When that happens they can sound like baby’s crying. Really scaring if you don’t know at first.

Your thoughts are exactly why we worked hard at finding this set up for her when we moved about 16 months ago... We are enjoying her

LOL, all of our kitties have been spayed so no mating going on here unless they still yowl

Freedom close to home. It's hard to let go but that's life.

Maybe the cats also miss you.

Yep! Na, no cat missing me...they all come and go in the house as they like (except at night, then they're locked in)

Nice shot Ruth! The mule fawns don't have white spots like our white-tailed fawns here??? That's disappointing!

The fawn do have the spots...for a while anyway...this is the mom (I think) of twins...

You must suffer!!!!! Get out there and hike all over and then come back and take pictures of the deer right by your house!

OK, OK, I'll go suffer - and at close to 100F hiking right now is surrering ...can I put off the suffering until maybe... October?

You must trek through the mountains with no food or water in 100F heat and eat bugs to keep yourself alive!!!
Or, you can sip iced tea and just lie to us that you did!

thanks, Tim! we can kind of tell some of the deer apart and I think this is the doe that has the twins - she's much skinnier now!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

kayaksailor In reply to TimLaSure [2009-08-25 16:18:53 +0000 UTC]

Indeed! Makes me want to put out feed for her - but I've been told that is a really bad idea as they (the deer) can get very agressive when you forget or run out or decide not to put it out any more...and it's against the local laws... so maybe we'll just put out water - so she doesn't have to hike up and down the hill to the creek

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TimLaSure In reply to kayaksailor [2009-08-25 16:25:37 +0000 UTC]

Yes, here too. Plus just about anything people put out gives them diarrhea, which is weird because they will even eat the azaleas and other landscaping around here

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

kayaksailor In reply to TimLaSure [2009-08-25 18:36:07 +0000 UTC]

the only plants outside of our "deer fenced" garden are lavender and oleandar - they don't seem to like those too much but they will stick their noses through the fence to reach the roses and sunflowers

I had some snap peas growing next and onto the fence - they didn't seem to like those too much either...but it was still spring with other choices, who knows what they'd eat now with all the grass dry...

Dawnelle-Blue In reply to kayaksailor [2009-08-25 21:45:33 +0000 UTC]

Me too!! We have some pretty tame ones in our neighborhood. They are used to traffic, so they'll stand right up next to the road with their babies and eat and never flinch!! The babies still have their pretty white spots. I want to take them home. I was friends with a family growing up that raised a baby fawn after the mother was killed. It acted like their dogs and chased cars up the driveway with them. So funny to watch!! Very social and hung around the dogs in the yard until it wandered back into the wild after it grew up.

kayaksailor In reply to Dawnelle-Blue [2009-08-26 01:09:34 +0000 UTC]

that would be sooooo fun!

But I'd be afraid that once it wandered away it would be an easier target for the hunters because it wouldn't be afraid
