They were hoping I'd left the garden gate open so they could do a bit of pruning - no such luck!

we live in northern California - about 45 minutes east of Sacramento; just as the hills start up to the Sierra Nevada mountains and south shore Lake Tahoe...we're in the foothills at about 1500' and our property is against a many thousand acre cattle ranch. We don't have serious fencing [link] (except for the small garden) and no dogs so the animals just treat our land like the 'wild' ranch... we are aware of how lucky we are

That must be lovely, you probably have a very large fauna! Just stray cats and dogs tiny spiders and grasshoppers where I live!
I loved that sequence of photos you linked me to,no problem at all for the sweet deer to get in!

aren't they sweet? I am really enjoying having them so close. I don't have any 'landscaping' to worry about (we have a little fenced garden and the plants outside the garden they won't eat - lavendar, rosemary and oleander) so let 'em come!!!

You must be enjoying your new home, it looks like paradise to me. Except the big spiders!!

the really big ones don't bother me - it's the smaller, speedy one's that give me the shivers

Lentekriebel In reply to kayaksailor [2009-01-04 10:01:57 +0000 UTC]

Only talking about them gives me the shivers!!! Can you get poisoned by the little ones? And the big ones also? Maybe your fear is just a healthy fear to protect you.

Most spiders can not hurt you. The tarantulas are really interesting if you can get past the idea that they are spiders...as far as poisoning the little ones - we don't have that bad of a problem with them. My daughter is the one that is more fearful but even she is beginning to be able to deal with them. And by deal I mean trap, squash, kill, get rid of them!

When in college I did a spider collection for my zoology class and I collected and killed over 150 spiders. But by doing that I learned their habits and how they react and that helped me to conquer MY own fear of them. I know if I do a particular thing to a spider sitting on its web in the corner of my room - I know what that spider is going to do! That knowledge gives me convidence that I KNOW its NOT going to come running over and jump into my face ... it is going to drop straight down out of the web into the glass I've got under it and die in the water I think the fear comes from our perception of a spider's unexpected movements...and if you learn what to expect you loose the fear! end of lesson

I'll keep it in mind next time a big black hairy spider takes a walk on my bedroom sealing or wall. But the fear is no longer as bad as it was before and they are not dangerous . And comparing to a tarantula they are not really big. We only can see them in terrariums of people who keep them as pets and in the Zoo. And I stay far away from them!!!

we don't have anything that we'd eat - but the deer would love the roses and other plants When we moved in last April there was (and still is) a nice little deer fenced 'zen' garden with lavendar and other herbs along with a half dozen roses and a wisteria up over a little bench...

well, I don't know about the FINEST delicacies, but deffinitely better than dry sticks But the grass is greening up so they've got more to eat than just dead grass and oak leaves
