"Um, hi? Th' name's Kai- shoo, now, go bother someone else."

REASON OF DEATH KAI was rather infamous at his school, as all he did was sit in the shade of the library and read. He was renowned for his short temper and unwillingness to work in groups. Everyone avoided him. There was the occasional straggler who would attempt to befriend him, but Kai would shrug them off, preferring his solitude.

And so Kai lived his lonely life, with only his single adoptive mother to talk to. The peace was only interrupted by the occasional bully and gossip surrounding Kai. Even for someone as detached as Kai, these things made him gradually more bitter by the day.

One day, as Kai was being shoved into a wall, someone reached out to stop the bullies. This boy's name was Ren. After rescuing Kai's pathetically weak self from the bullies, Ren tried to strike up a conversation. Kai, assuming that the mysterious boy was like all the others, promptly ignored him and fled the scene.

The next day, Ren was hanging around Kai's usual spot, waiting for him. Ren tried to talk to Kai once more, but the boy avoided him. The days went on like this, with Ren constantly following Kai everywhere, until the day Kai's wall crumbled. He grudgingly made conversation with the other eager boy, and they gradually became the best of friends.

Ren, giddy with his victory, dragged Kai out to plant a tree with him. The tree was easily obtained; Ren's mother was a florist. The sapling was a sourwood; small and just budding as the boys went off to plant it. As they patted the last dregs of soil into place, Ren stated that the tree would grow as their friendship did. Kai punched him in the gut for being cheesy and stormed off, red in the face.

One month later, the tree had grown significantly, nurtured by both of the boys who took great care of it. It was only a few days into the month that Ren lent Kai a book to read. As they were about to cross the crosswalk after school that day, some of the students who were bitter towards the boys' relationship reached out to push Ren into the incoming car. Kai saw the action and yanked his friend out of the way, the force of this move throwing him into the path of the car.

The collision killed him immediately.
