They are basalt stones sticking up in the sand on the beach at low tide. They have been there so long seaweed and barnacles have grown on them!

I'm thinking they're always there too, it just takes a special way of looking at the world. I know people who wouldn't have trudged right through without a glance or thought...my brother in law comes to mind...
