Great lighting. Very foreboding and a bit poignant as well.

They explained it poorly, but prothean was the name of both a species and an empire, multiple species were part of the empire. All took the name prothean, so the images could be of two different species named 'prothean'.

That's a valid point, actually. Interesting.

I think Javik mentioned they were the dominant species in the cycle before them. 'Innonusen' or something like that.

You're correct. Inusannon I think? They supposedly built everything on Ilos.
Quite fascinating how the entire galaxy (and me at the time) got it all wrong.

Bioware is a master at retcons. I like the Insuannon-Prothean look more.
However after Me2, Bioware wanted to make the Protheans look more like the Collectors.

This is very beautiful. I always loved Ilos... you could tell it was a dead world.
ME3 SPOILER: Of course, we now know that the statues (or husks?) on Ilos were of the race that came before the Protheans: the Inusannon.

Blah, none of us knew. Besides... these guys still exist. They're just not Protheans.
And yeah... Javik is my ultimate troll buddy.

I'm gonna have to make some Javik fanart here soon once I have some spare time.

Given all of the tendenious masses, tenticales and unusualality of the Protheans' silhouettes, do you think that they're both endo and exoskeletal? Because this piece here makes me think so, and I hope so because it looks really cool.

That is an interesting thought...
I'd love to see an official clarification, though I won't expect one. They're extinct after all, and I have to admit I like the mystery surrounding them as well.

There's actually a lot of spectulation that the DLC squadmate in Mass Effect three will be a cloned or hybernated Prothean -- like the dead ones from Ilos.

The statues on Illos showed them. And the codex entry in ME2. They look somewhat like a human husk with moar tentacles.

Well, it is prbaly safe to think that the codex Prothean is, in fact, an indoctinated Prothean. It is too similar to the husks to just be a regular prothean. However, the anatomy is still probably the same, seeing as husks are human pallete swaps.

Assuming they modeled the statues directly after their physical appearance.
It's a possibility though.

There should be a squad member in M E 3 who's the last Prothean, caught in a time-bubble, or something.
