Description I've always been interested in the Protheans in the Mass Effect games. They're like the ancient Egyptians of the galaxy.
It's interesting to think about this; It's because of the Protheans that Shepard is able to stop the Reapers (or at least try, what do I know?). Without them, there would be no beacon and so on.
They also creep the living crap out of me. I literally had nightmares after visiting Ilos in the first game.

My Protheans are based on the ones you see in Shepard's vision. I think that in the games, it's still kind of unclear what the species really looked like.
They're sharing one last prayer (whether it's religious or not, I don't know. I don't even know if they have religion) as the Reapers destroy their whole civilization around them. This is symbolized by the vaguely Reaper-shaped blob in the window to the right.
It took me a while to finish this because it kind of creeped me out at the start. However, I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out.

Used Photoshop and a Wacom tablet.

Great lighting. Very foreboding and a bit poignant as well.

They explained it poorly, but prothean was the name of both a species and an empire, multiple species were part of the empire. All took the name prothean, so the images could be of two different species named 'prothean'.

That's a valid point, actually. Interesting.

I think Javik mentioned they were the dominant species in the cycle before them. 'Innonusen' or something like that.

You're correct. Inusannon I think? They supposedly built everything on Ilos.

Quite fascinating how the entire galaxy (and me at the time) got it all wrong.

Bioware is a master at retcons. I like the Insuannon-Prothean look more.

However after Me2, Bioware wanted to make the Protheans look more like the Collectors.

This is very beautiful. I always loved Ilos... you could tell it was a dead world.
ME3 SPOILER: Of course, we now know that the statues (or husks?) on Ilos were of the race that came before the Protheans: the Inusannon.

Yeah this piece feels... err... wrong in hindsight, but thank you for the feedback!

I actually LOVE what ME3 did with the Protheans (especially Javik), it feels like my ideas got shot down by a 50 000 year old troll. In a totally good way, mind you.

Blah, none of us knew. Besides... these guys still exist. They're just not Protheans.
And yeah... Javik is my ultimate troll buddy.

I'm gonna have to make some Javik fanart here soon once I have some spare time.

Wow this is gorgeous! I loved the prothean designs in the game and at first I thought they were humans who had vines inside their eyes....Those gave me nightmares

Wonderful work, awesome colours, I really like it.
Protheans kinda remind me of plants mixed with squids .

Given all of the tendenious masses, tenticales and unusualality of the Protheans' silhouettes, do you think that they're both endo and exoskeletal? Because this piece here makes me think so, and I hope so because it looks really cool.

KaraNan In reply to halfbreed1426 [2011-09-03 18:04:07 +0000 UTC]

That is an interesting thought...
I'd love to see an official clarification, though I won't expect one. They're extinct after all, and I have to admit I like the mystery surrounding them as well.

halfbreed1426 In reply to KaraNan [2011-09-16 06:45:56 +0000 UTC]

There's actually a lot of spectulation that the DLC squadmate in Mass Effect three will be a cloned or hybernated Prothean -- like the dead ones from Ilos.

The statues on Illos showed them. And the codex entry in ME2. They look somewhat like a human husk with moar tentacles.

luaiere In reply to AvP66 [2011-09-03 03:07:28 +0000 UTC]

Well, it is prbaly safe to think that the codex Prothean is, in fact, an indoctinated Prothean. It is too similar to the husks to just be a regular prothean. However, the anatomy is still probably the same, seeing as husks are human pallete swaps.

KaraNan In reply to AvP66 [2011-08-22 20:26:35 +0000 UTC]

Assuming they modeled the statues directly after their physical appearance.
It's a possibility though.

When I first saw them (or what was left of them...) on Ilos they reminded me about the space jockey in Alien...

And yes, they scared me too... Ilos in itself scared me, creepy place... But cool!

There should be a squad member in M E 3 who's the last Prothean, caught in a time-bubble, or something.

Impressive, I really like the atmosphere of collected desperation you created in this pic. All is lost, but instead of giving in into panic, they gather for a last prayer. Strong black silouettes on stained glass-like background, simple but effective
