it's always Vergil who is suffering most

I think it's also the way he chooses to remember that is what damages him.
Dante remembers his mother and brother dying because of demons, and resolves to rid the world of demons who would harm humans by opening a shop dedicated to helping those who ask for help.
Vergil remembers everyone abandoning him and decides to grow more powerful so he will a) never lose anything again, and b) never need anyone again, and c) destroy his human side so he won't feel bad anymore.
Dante and Vergil suffered just about equally, but it was Vergil who chose to linger on the suffering and suffer worse for it... ;~; sad bbs

I also think that being the older brother, it gave him the feeling of responsibity. he felt guilty for not protecting his mother and his younger brother when he was a child while demons attacked them, which made him hunger for power too.
