Description This is Jackson "Jax" Ray, the main character of my upcoming graphic novel, "Angels of the Sword." It's done in ink on cardstock. I've mostly been a pencil artist, until now. I'm currently using ZIG pens and Permapaque markers for the art and borders, and then digitally adding dialogue, word balloons, and special effects. This one is the base art, so it's still nice and clean!

I love the crisp line-art and the dark shadows, very cool.

I'm not one to trust myself with my art and to be honest, I hate starting in pen if I can avoid it, which is why I draw everything first, ink over it and erase the pencil lines. That way I have a chance to fix things before they are indelibly fixed to the page.

Thanks! I'm slowly getting the hang of inking. And getting over my fear of the pens!! Pencils are forgiving, and can be erased, but ink holds a grudge over mistakes! (~-^)

I only scan in the pencil stages on stuff that I like too much to ruin. You seem to be a process person when it comes to art. Personally, I'm far to impatient to be so process-minded.

Yeah, I can relate to that. I'm always afraid of ruining my pencil work, at the inking stage. I've gotten less scary about it, though. When I first started to ink "Angels of the Sword," I scanned all the pencils in, first, just in case I goofed up. That way, I'd still have something to use to try, again, without having to completely re-draw the page. But lately, I've gotten confident with the pens, and often just blast right from pencil to ink, without scanning in between. I really should scan the pencils, too, anyway, just so I have a record of what it looked like, before. I do like to document the stages of things, when I can.

Yeah, I'm very much process-minded. I'm kind of anal about it, too. I have to do things in a certain way, and in a certain order, or I get all agitated. That extends to several aspects of my life, besides art!

I'm a bit like that with other things in life (especially tidiness related stuff...) but I'm far, far too impatient with my art. It's something I've got to get out of, because it's holding me back.

heh It wouldn't do me any good to be impatient with my art, because I can't draw very fast and have it look halfway nice. That's why I usually try to do it in stages. I draw one part, document it, then put it aside for a while (sometimes several days). I come back to it, do a bit more, document it, and put it aside, again. I used to try to do the whole piece from start to finish in one go, but that's too tiresome and usually just ends up making me frustrated, and more reluctant to even start another piece, later.

I'm going to give your way of doing things a try, just to see.
