Description This is a good example of my pencil art. It's Jax, again, from "Angels of the Sword," playing his vintage '70s Fender Strat on the sidewalk for money.

Yeah, this one is my own favorite. I had reference for everything except his legs, which I probably erased about two dozen times before finally getting something I liked and looked halfway okay. Thanks!

His left arm looks a little long from shoulder to elbow. Apart from that, the drawing is great! The shading on this one quite effective and realistic. Great job.

Thanks! Yeah, it looks a little long to me, too. I was trying for a bit of foreshortening, but failed at it. That was as close as I could get it, without erasing a hole in the paper. (O.o) Or starting over, which I really hate to do, because I'm lazy.

I Love this picture. Though I have to wonder why hes has to play on the streets when he owns a gutiar like that.

heh Thanks! And thanks for the ! I appreciate it!

I used to own two guitars like that, but had to sell them in order to continue eating. (O.o) Also, nobody said he has to play on the street. I think he just likes to do it. (~-^)

anxy [2006-01-08 05:11:43 +0000 UTC]

I love this image. I can feel the movement, and the shading realy makes "jax" and his belongings stand out from the background. For a monotone pencil sketch this realy is striking...

If i was to give some constructive criticism i would say practice your hands... although i'm in two minds about saying this because i love the simple shapes of them, and too much detail may ruin the effect of the movement. Just with the hair and clothes being so detailed i think the hand doing the cords possibly isn't at its full potential of what you're capable to do. Am i right in saying you lack confidence in doing them? A lot of people are like this.

KaiStarr In reply to anxy [2006-01-09 04:49:38 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I'm glad you like it. (^-^)

And yes, often, I am less confident about drawing hands than about drawing other things. I'm not sure how I feel about his hands, in this one. I hoped to capture some sense of motion, but at the same time, not be too vague. You might notice that I don't put a lot of detail in the face, either. It's part of my style to have the faces a bit more iconic than what surrounds them, but that doesn't necessarily have to extend to the hands.

Thanks! I wrangled with his legs for hours. (O.o) I think I must have erased them at least a dozen times before finally finding a spot that looked halfway natural. (~-^)

Murakami-Tsuki [2006-01-02 06:25:48 +0000 UTC]

Wow, excellent detail, and your proportions are great! Nice concept too. But how can someone who has to play on the street for money afford a Fender? XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KaiStarr In reply to Murakami-Tsuki [2006-01-02 06:43:39 +0000 UTC]

hehe Thanks for the compliments, and for the fav! It's possible to have no money, yet have good musical equipment. I was in that spot, once upon a time. Back in the 80's, I had two Fender Strats, both American-made and expensive. But I had bought them at a pawn shop from a guy who had no clue what they were worth. I ended up having to sell both of them, and my expensive Marshall amplifier, just so I could continue to eat. Jax's Strat is a garage-sale find, and he's had it since he was a teenager. It was easier, in days past, to find such things in garage sales, going for $20 because the owner just wanted to get rid of it. Also, nobody said he has to play on the street. I think he just enjoys it. I know I would. (~-^)

Murakami-Tsuki In reply to KaiStarr [2006-01-02 06:54:43 +0000 UTC]

OK, good point. One of my friends found an old Fender custom in her uncle's attic, just lyin around. And being a street performer would be fun, I've seen some guys that really get into what they're doing. Hmmmm... that would be pretty fun...

KaiStarr In reply to Murakami-Tsuki [2006-01-02 07:21:27 +0000 UTC]

Making music is always fun, no matter where you are! I envy your friend. I really miss my Strats! I have four guitars, now (one of which is a bass), but I'm still missing the Fender sound. Maybe someday, I will have another one! Or three. (~-^)

Murakami-Tsuki In reply to KaiStarr [2006-01-02 18:16:43 +0000 UTC]

Haha, you don't need to envy my friend. Her parents wouldn't let her keep it. (They said she'll make too much noise.) I never really got into playing instruments (although I have played flute, piano, and guitar at one point), but I always was proud when I could play a song well.

KaiStarr In reply to Murakami-Tsuki [2006-01-02 20:28:15 +0000 UTC]

Heh! My parents said I made too much noise with my first electric guitar, too. So I got some headphones and played that way. Nearly deafened myself, but at least I could keep the guitar! It's too bad she can't keep it. I'll bet it sounds great! I went for a long time without playing, after I sold my Strats, then I got an acoustic/electric and played it at Ren fairs, then went another long time without really playing much. Now I'm sorry that I didn't play more, because I'm having to re-learn a lot! But I still love it. Probably will never be in another band, but that's okay. I had my little dream, for a while, sucky as it was. (^-^)

You have some great trad. art talent..well done with the shading and the attention to detail..I really like the brick b/g..and the character's hair..hehe

I only wish that you had a larger size with the full view so that there could be a closer view..

other than that..good job.

Thanks so much! I appreciate the compliment. I just added a larger size for the full view. It's almost twice the size of the previous one, so I hope it will help with seeing details better. (^-^)

KaiStarr In reply to Tunneler [2005-12-30 22:46:58 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Yeah, it's very hard to keep from smearing it. If I'm doing something heavily shaded, like this, what I usually do is lay a piece of thinner paper over it to rest my hand on. It helps a lot!

Ah, thank you! (^-^) Jax is a fictionalized version of me, from my band days. "Angels of the Sword" will be semi-autobiographical, so I'm extra excited about getting it started, soon! I will post links to it, when it debuts, if you are interested in seeing it, too.
