The dominance of black makes the image eerily appealing. Putting the birds in unsettling, perhaps circular, flight adds to the threatening atmosphere. The light breaking through the cloud lessens the gloom a little. Then there is the cat. It looks tense: the fur, ears and body position all suggest a cat ready for action. This is not an easy image. There is uncertainty, unease and restlessness. We can only wonder why the cat is turning round. Its eyes are cold, penetrating and slightly hostile. The image invites us to guess what is happening but the clues are limited. The rock the cat is sitting seems neutral - intended not to help us. Overall, it is a powerful image but an unsettling one. A change from the superficial, the cheerful and the sentimental.
