He looks blind. I thought Homer was merely colour blind? I could be wrong about that. I think the evidence comes from his incongruous descriptions of things, like the "wine dark sea".

Incredible work as usual. Reference wise it reminds me a little of Robert Powell's portrait in the film Jesus of Nazereth - probably the eyes, nose and upward gaze.

Homer! Perfect timing, we just went through our old books and found a 200 year old copy of the Iliad.

It's a really great and very realistic drawing^^ Though there's no proof that Homer looked like this because all his portraits were made long after his death. I, however, still like the idea of having a "face" of the person who probably was the one who told the stories of Troy and Odysseus.

JW-Jeong In reply to Aelex [2013-06-01 09:49:29 +0000 UTC]

Haha, you're right. I have no proof that the man looked like that and that was the whole idea of doing this one.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Aelex In reply to JW-Jeong [2013-06-01 16:27:47 +0000 UTC]

And it was a good idea
I'm sorry I had to say that. It's just something I've learned from my teachers. I study classical and ancient studies and they can't get tired of telling us that noone knows if Homer existed for real and what he looks like.
They also can't say that about other "historical" persons. Anyway, I still like it to have a face to them and not just a name.

billharrison In reply to Aelex [2013-06-07 06:28:58 +0000 UTC]

No one knows what Jesus looked like either, but that doesn't stop people from doing paintings of him. I've always liked how artists in this country make him look like a white-boy surfer. Based on where and when he lived, he was probably a short swarthy man with black hair and a big nose, but you never see him portrayed that way. LOL!

Wow!! It's really great to see someone paint such a famous, and yet commonly non-credited, person. It's breathtaking, the work that you do I'm a new watcher, but I already look forward to the message saying you've put up something else for us to enjoy! I especially love the eyes; if I'm not mistaken, Homer is thought to be a blind poet. There's just so much put into this, into every piece of yours that I've seen . . . I could go on forever, but I won't. I hope you keep up the good work!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

JW-Jeong In reply to mechanicalsky23 [2013-06-01 09:51:32 +0000 UTC]

You're right. Homer is thought be a blind poet and it was both tough and interesting to making him look convincingly blind and yet in possession of the deeper 'sight'.
Thanks for the comment!
