Carl Lucas was born in Harlem, New York, to a retired police officer, James Lucas. Lucas spent his youth causing trouble on the streets with his friends Willis Stryker and Reva Connors. He eventually joined a gang called The Rivals along with his best friend Stryker. He fought the rival gang the Diablos and committed various petty thefts, often on behalf of deformed crime-lord Sonny Caputo a.k.a. Hammer. Lucas was in and out of juvenile homes throughout his teens. He dreamed of becoming a major New York racketeer until he finally realized how his actions were hurting his family. When he was 27, he was falsely accused of raping a woman in Brooklyn. He was thrown in prison and while there he volunteered for illegal experimentation. This experimentation have Lucas impenetrable skin and super strength. He then gets released for good behavior and meets a local detective of the NYPD named Jessica Jones. They immediately hit it off and started dating. Jessica tells Luke about the legend of a vigilante with a glowing fist. They track him down and find out he is Danny Rand, now going by the name Iron Fist. They become great friends and meet Patricia "Patsy" Walker who goes by the name Hellcat. Luke, Danny, and Patsy join the New Defenders with Daredevil before they have a falling out and quit the team and start a business called Heroes for Hire. Once they start this team Jessica quits the force.
