Description This is part two of a complete step-by-step, start-to-finish tutorial of how I did the image below. Part One of the Tutorial is in the middle, Part Three is on the right:

Part o2: Shading

*This tutorial is primarily for PaintTool SAI

*My four main brushes and settings: [link]
I used the pen tool (though at size 4) for the lineart, the brush tool for the sketch and coloring, and the brush and water tools for blending purposes.

If you have any questions at all, totally feel free to ask me anything!
Also the little cheeb next to Jotaku is Del and belongs to ~fetalstar

SAI has like 2840930932 different versions out there unfortunately, and not all of them have the same tools.
On some versions it's called Shade.  Some don't even have it--in which case your closest option to what I use is Multiply.

I don't seem to have the %oA%oe on my blending mode drop down... What are your other blending modes?

I have normal, Multiply, screen, overlay, Luminosity, Shade, Lumi and shade, Binary color. Whatever mode you don't have on mine should be the %oA%oe equivalent. if that makes sense...............

I'm sorry this is such a late reply (I don't check dA often oops!)
But my weird mode is the equivalent of Shade on yours!

You amazing person you, I love your tutorials but I have one problem. Sai doesnt have this setting that your saying to use. T_T

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jotaku In reply to Aaron-Mayhem [2012-05-18 05:03:04 +0000 UTC]

Unfortunately not all of them do. :c
In that case you can use Multiply--but you will have to pick more bolder colors instead of something neutral to get the same shading effect.

What version of sai do you have? I can't seem to find the 'opacity lock' thing anywhere...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jotaku In reply to GodessFae [2012-01-18 04:21:28 +0000 UTC]

There should be something like it... I believe there are, like, three options below the blend mood drop-down. Whichever one has to deal with opacity? Sorry, I dunno what it is exactly, but it's there, just under a different name. :c

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GodessFae In reply to Jotaku [2012-01-18 16:20:07 +0000 UTC]

hummm, I can't find it XD
That's okay.
...wait...would it be the 'keep opacity' check box under the blending persistence and dilution bars?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jotaku In reply to GodessFae [2012-01-18 18:09:20 +0000 UTC]

Probably! :'o Draw something, click that, and try to scribble all over the page with a different color. If it only stays over what you've already drawn, you've found it!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GodessFae In reply to Jotaku [2012-01-19 15:42:11 +0000 UTC]

haha, alas, it didn't XD
but clipping group does that....
hummmmm interesting... XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jotaku In reply to GodessFae [2012-01-19 17:05:19 +0000 UTC]

Clipping group should be, where, like, if you draw something, then make a new layer, then set it to clipping group, it will only color what's underneath it. That's what it's called on Photoshop and it does the same thing as layer clip on my SAI.

GodessFae In reply to Jotaku [2012-01-19 18:07:20 +0000 UTC]

hum... so the opacity lock still eludes me... XD
oh well, I guess I'll manage XD (I'll keep googling and looking though )

Jotaku In reply to GodessFae [2012-01-19 20:31:27 +0000 UTC]

It's the 'preserve opacity' option. That will preserve, or lock, the transparent and non-transparent pixels on any layer.

thanks ! just curious
how many layers did you use for the tones and base layers?
and such.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jotaku In reply to blackXXraine [2012-01-16 19:53:41 +0000 UTC]

Ugh, jeez, I don't have it saved in layer format. Maybe around, like, 8 or so for the flats? I don't know, exactly. I just made sure each color didn't touch on the same layer.
Shading was all done one one layer, and.. Other than that, there's just the graphics layer in the back and a couple effects layers like my overlay or highlights layers.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

blackXXraine In reply to Jotaku [2012-01-16 20:32:42 +0000 UTC]

thanks! >w<
How did you get the shading to not overlap or was it the same color on the .. multiply-like .. layer?

Sorry for all the questions ! ><

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jotaku In reply to blackXXraine [2012-01-16 20:37:45 +0000 UTC]

I used one color for all the shading; this one right here --> [link]
The nice thing about that multiply-like layer, is that it sorta darkens and combines the color you use for the shading and the color beneath it. This way you can have all the shading have the same tint, while also still being a darker version of whatever is beneath it. C:
(Hope that makes sense!)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

blackXXraine In reply to Jotaku [2012-01-17 07:34:48 +0000 UTC]

yea it does !
I have Photoshop and tried doing that multiply thing with photoshop but it gets really sensitive with the blending so i get these awkward rings if i don't blend/ blur perfectly. >< ;;;;

Thanks again!

Thanks for this! I'm a complete noob with Sai and with digital colouring, and I love your style, so maybe I'll take a stab at it using this as a guideline.
