Description This is part one of a complete step-by-step, start-to-finish tutorial of the image below. Part Two of the tutorial is in the middle, Part Three is on the Right.

Part o1: Sketching, Lineart, and Flats

*This tutorial is primarily for PaintTool SAI

*My four main brushes and settings: [link]
I used the pen tool (though at size 4) for the lineart, the brush tool for the sketch and coloring, and the brush and water tools for blending purposes.

*For an explanation of why I do that whole selecting process check this out: [link]

Ok what is opacity lock? And layer clip? What do they do??

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jotaku In reply to bluenightwolf [2014-12-17 23:20:24 +0000 UTC]

They're sometimes called different things on different versions/different programs, but essentially:
Opacity Lock, "locks" the opacity of the layer.  So if I draw and color in a circle, check opacity lock, and try to draw with a different color, it will ONLY show up on that circle--on opaque pixels only.  If I scribble outside of the circle with that option checked, nothing will show on that layer of the canvas.

Layer Clip--sometimes called Clipping Group on other versions/programs, is similar to Opacity Lock, except it works on a different layer than your drawing.  In this case, if I drew and colored in a circle, then created a NEW layer above it and checked Layer Clip, anything I draw on that new layer will only show up over non-transparent pixels of the layer below it.  So same thing; if I scribble outside of where the circle is on the lower layer, it won't show up on the layer clipped to it.

Hopefully that cleared t up/made sense??

Man, this was definitely helpful~ I don't really know why but I read the entire tutorial backwards.... Uhm, yes, I'm strange, but this was great!! I really love how detailed your work is!! I'll try and use these techniques in later pieces~ Thanks again!!

I love your art and this tutorial help a lot! But I was wondering how you get ideas for their positions in your pictures? I always get stuck on that.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jotaku In reply to CherryMiku [2012-06-11 18:34:59 +0000 UTC]

Well, honestly, the ideas just.. pop into my head. I try to think of an interesting pose I'd like to draw and then I sketch it out. If it looks bad, I scrap it and try something different, or if I can just erase the parts I don't like, I do that and try other stuff.
Mostly, my desire for different poses comes from being tired of drawing the same things. And I just felt like I was ready for that step. But I went yeeaarrrs of pretty much just drawing people standing there ahah;;

Hi, there's just one part that I don't understand.
Did you choose 8.5 inch by 11 inch at 300 DPI?
That's a very small canvas that show you many pixal of your brush coloring or line.
lol

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jotaku In reply to WHITEBEASTX [2012-03-24 05:53:07 +0000 UTC]

Ummm noo, you're definitely mistaken. That's a REALLY BIG canvas. That's the recommended settings for like art prints and such (at least in the US it is)
[link]
This is my canvas at 8.5x11 at 300 dpi, viewing at 100%. The corner shows how much of the entire canvas I'm seeing... so as you can see, it's a VERY LARGE canvas.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

WHITEBEASTX In reply to Jotaku [2012-03-24 06:18:10 +0000 UTC]

oh, well that's very strange to me. Because i choose the same size as you choose, and my brush (is actually size 2!) was a big circle in canvas. :< i dont know whats going on. I am using Sai paint tool too.

but it is does not matter if you can choose bigger size with different DPI, right?

I'm not good with this "size" of canvas, but thanks for telling me. your tutorial helps a lot.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jotaku In reply to WHITEBEASTX [2012-03-24 07:24:01 +0000 UTC]

Well that is strange, and I don't know what to tell you honestly :c
The bigger DPI, though, the higher quality the image. 72 is standard print (like printing text, word docs, etc) dpi, 300 is usually the minimum for a really nice photo print, and I think 600 is the high-end professional printing.
So, if you're planning to print, you definitely want higher dpi. If not, I guess I just wouldn't worry about it and fit the canvas to whatever size you want?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

WHITEBEASTX In reply to Jotaku [2012-03-24 09:48:05 +0000 UTC]

I kinda figure out now. your right, the bigger dpi, the better quality it is! OMG thats what i need! haha

I try coloring and my entire picture just gets selected when I only want to do it section by section..What exactly is it that you do for coloring? :/ I'm kind of those people who want a little bit more detail in coloring since I don't color often...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jotaku In reply to SolarOnyou [2012-02-18 19:14:08 +0000 UTC]

You have to mess with the selection properties so it doesn't select the entire image, if you're going to lay down the flats my way... U-unless you're talking about something else?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SolarOnyou In reply to Jotaku [2012-02-18 19:18:24 +0000 UTC]

Well, when I color I use the bucket tool and last time I did that, it would select the indiviual area I wanted to work in, like, just the face or hair..Things like that, but now that I'm doing it the way you recommend the color just covers both of my girls and I just want to focus on one of their faces. How do I fix that?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jotaku In reply to SolarOnyou [2012-02-18 19:25:09 +0000 UTC]

Ummmm Well unless you have holes in your flats or accidentally messed with the bucket settings, I don't know what it'd be.
Honestly, I never us the bucket tool for my art. I always use the brush and actually color things by hand.

Genius! Finally I get the starting part. No other tutorial have explained it this good and easy step-by-step from the start with motivations to each choice taken in every step. I have no problem drawing traditional, but in the computer I'm totally lost ... until now

Aw that's great! I've had a couple artists I wish I could see their line art techniques and I figured there might be a few people out there who would like to see what do fully from start to finish, including this stuff.
I'm super glad it's helped you out! ; uuu; <3

SilentAzrael [2012-01-24 22:09:27 +0000 UTC]

Hilo! I was wondering o.o how long does it typically take you to complete line art? I think my main issue it that I'm too impatient and jump into the coloring. This of course screws me over later and I end up abandoning the project >.>

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jotaku In reply to SilentAzrael [2012-01-24 22:16:09 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm it depends on who intricate the picture is. I'd say probably anywhere between an hour and three hours depending. C:
If you get impatient, maybe stop and doodle something or whatever until you're chill again? :'o
I know lineart can be a pain because it DOES need patience. @m@

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SilentAzrael In reply to Jotaku [2012-01-24 22:33:45 +0000 UTC]

Well, another part of the problem might be that I'm super critical. I'm afraid shaky lines will ruin the picture, but does it really make a difference in the end? o.o

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jotaku In reply to SilentAzrael [2012-01-24 22:49:05 +0000 UTC]

Hmm well if you're lines are shaky you need to do your strokes faster (or something is wrong with your program). I'm always pretty careful about making sure my lines are nice and thin and smooth--and so if there are any mistakes the thinness usually hides them pretty well.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SilentAzrael In reply to Jotaku [2012-01-24 23:06:44 +0000 UTC]

I'm sorry for all the questions >.> but what is your line thickness usually?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jotaku In reply to SilentAzrael [2012-01-24 23:59:00 +0000 UTC]

Well, first of all I usually draw on an 8.5x11 at 300dpi image, so it's pretty huge. My brush size is usually then at 4.
And no worries, I don't mind. C:

SilentAzrael In reply to Jotaku [2012-01-25 01:19:20 +0000 UTC]

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

SilentAzrael In reply to Jotaku [2012-01-25 01:18:03 +0000 UTC]

lol wow that is pretty huge. Do you shrink the image once you are done?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jotaku In reply to SilentAzrael [2012-01-25 01:20:08 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, usually down to 25-35% the original size.
I like to have it big JUST IN CASE, like, if I want to make a print or if it's a commission, if they want to be able to print it themselves.
