Description This is a big commission I just finished that’s been a little while in the making. A lot of fun to paint all these different characters together. Thanks, Neil!

They are, of course, Paddington Bear, Dr. John Watson, Rupert Bear, Sherlock Holmes, Thomas the Tank Engine, and Bungo (who is a Womble). The “Motley Hall” sign references another British children’s show, The Ghosts of Motley Hall.

Gouache, of course. 14”x17”, on 140lb Arches Hot Press.

Beautiful and enjoyable-as a kiddie in Britain in the 60s and 70s they are all very familiar! Do you accept commissions at all - you indicated that this picture is a commission.

Sorry for responding 27 weeks late! I'm afraid no longer accept commissions, but thanks for your interest, and glad you like the picture! I did commissions earlier in my career, but now all my time is taken up with commercial work.

Except Thomas, the tank engine was made in 1984. so he should have put in 80s

That's a very good point - though the stories date well before that.

I think Thomas' first story by Rev W Awdry was in 1946.

The first book in The Railway Series was written in 1945, but Thomas' first appearance was in the second book written in 1946.

To me, it looks more like they went to the Drayton Manor Thomas Land. If the setting were Sodor, Thomas would've looked right.

You've summed up a lot of great literature classics in one scene alone - feels very like the vintage Annual books we get yearly in Great Britain. How many of these characters are you familiar with, though, since your bio states that you're Canadian-based?

Brilliant work overall

JoriB In reply to QwertyChris [2013-01-17 15:30:55 +0000 UTC]

All of them except the Wombles! I had no clue who they were when I was commissioned to produce this, so I watched an episode or two of the show and read up on them before making the artwork.
The others I have varying degrees of familiarity with, and Rupert was probably the most present in my childhood.

Thanks for the kind words.
