Description This is the tutorial that so many of you have request for, this is a step by step on how I paint my hair in my paintings. I have used Clara’s beautiful face from my painting “Clara from Journey to the centre of the Tardis (below)” I have removed all of her hair and have painted without any references Clara with blonde hair in a style that came to my head. I wanted to show you all just how easy it is to paint volume realistic hair.

With my Eye, Nose, Mouth and ear tutorial, you can learn to do a realistic face to paint the hair on but I have also included a template from my Clara painting without any hair so you can download it and follow my step by step method and paint the beautiful hair yourself.

Please feel free to download the bust of Clara to practise on, I would love to see your interpretations.

I hope you all like this one If you have time please leave a comment, fav it or add me to your Watch list.
I hope that you can take a little something from this

I started doing the paintings on black backgrounds to start with because its easy on my eyes and it just stuck now with everything I paint. Glad you like it, thank you

I'm all for beautiful hair (I have a more animesque style, though)

Do you have a Part 1, or a start of some kind for the series? Do you list the tools (program, type of brushes) used somewhere?

jht888 In reply to Narumo [2013-10-31 06:49:49 +0000 UTC]

I first started these tutorials with the eye tutorial, then the nose, followed by the mouth then the hair and lastly the ears (links in the description above) but I will be covering more bits in the future like blending, textures, hands, body etc.

I use Photoshop CS5 and the main brush I use is the standard soft brush which is for 95% for all my paintings. I use the soft brush for near enough everything from skin, hair, clothes absolutely nearly everything as I am self taught and I like to keep everything really simple. I never use the BLUR or SMUDGE tools and never use any MASKS either. I just wanted to show everyone that realistic panting can be achieved using the most simple brush and practise.

Thank you so much for taking the time to comment

Thank you for posting this. I have a question, how many layers did you use?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

jht888 In reply to JPMNeg [2013-10-25 21:33:09 +0000 UTC]

You are welcome For the building up of the hair, I use around four or five layers depending on how much body I want the hair to have, each layer is a different shade of hair colour. I hope this helps you

Just one question : what are the settings of your brush for the hair ? I'm just curious

jht888 In reply to Somelarder [2013-10-19 19:29:15 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much Melvin

The brush is a standard soft brush with settings of 50% Flow and Opacity, with pressure sensitivity pressed on

Thank you so much! It looks amazing (when I try to paint like this, it always looked, like she has "broken" hair) - seems I need to practice more
Do you use 100 % opacity - and hard edge?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

jht888 In reply to Rita-Ria [2013-10-18 19:01:42 +0000 UTC]

You are very kind, thank you again

I use a standard soft brush, with 50% Flow and Opacity with the pressure sensitively pressed on for both, so the lighter you press, the softer the hairs
