Description This is a step by step tutorial on how I do my mouths on my paintings following my eye and nose tutorials. I have broken it down to as many steps as I can so you can see how and in what order I paint. The final step in the picture is what the painting would look like before I add any texturing to it to make it realistic.

Thank you for taking the time to view this and I hope that this might help some of you a little, and thank you for all those who commented on my Eye, Nose, Hair and ear Tutorial (below with an example of how it would fit into a full portrait. )

do you use reference image?

jht888 In reply to FiMiS [2017-01-02 09:22:33 +0000 UTC]

I use quite a few reference images for each individual painting. They are used for shapes, lighting shades and most importantly the colours. I did loads of life drawing when I was at art college and researched night and day on anatomy and muscles so drawing an accurate figure in any pose and correct shading is quite straight forward. I absolutely love drawing cartoons and graphic novels but on a serious level I do portraits painting for customers. But for DeviantArt, I wanted to concentrate on more realistic paintings and in order for myself to paint something that looks so realistic I have to use loads just to do a single painting. To do a single piece of fan art, I would use around 5 to 10 images of that person so I can get the proportion and shape right. I hope this helps

...but for this mouth tutorial, I didn't use any references, I just did the basic shape of a mouth and nose and showed some teeth

Lovely tutorials! Digital painting is even more difficult than oils or acrylic I think. Do you add the shades in layers?
Your paintings look like real people.

I do all the shading on one layer but do different layers for completely separate items. For example in the mouth tutorial, the teeth are on a new layer

I have a beginner question for you! How do you manage to amalgamate the colors together? I mean, from the box 20 to box 21, how do you manage to crush colorsΒ at cheek? Is it a special tool that I do not know how to set or is it a gradient countless shade of beige?
(Sorry for my disastrous way to express myself in English! I hope you'll understand me!)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

jht888 In reply to djedje666 [2013-10-16 08:17:19 +0000 UTC]

No need to be sorry, your English is more than fine. This is a very common question that a lot of deviants ask me via Notes.Β

I use a standard soft brush 95% of the time in all my paintings, and the 5% is only used at the end if I ever want any texturing such as freckles on the skin, stubble on a males chin, clothes etc. When I paint apart from the initial blocking of colours, I set the soft brush settings to 50% FLOW and 50% OPACITY always, this never changes as I want to keep painting really simple. I never ever use MASKS (as I cannot work them out), the SMUDGE tool or the BLUR tool and no gradient tools either. Make sure the pressure sensitive button is pressed on for both flow and opacity so when you paint or blend colours together, such as the cheeks from steps 20 to 21, if you lightly paint one of the colours over the edges of the other, you will find that it will blend beautifully and produce naturally the shades of the two colours that you have blended.Β

I will be doing some real time videos soon and go through step by step on everything. Things like layers, choosing colours, blending etc on a specific topic such as the eye. So you can watch me paint and talk from start to finish on the eye for example.Β

I hope this helps a little but don't worry if it's not too clear as the videos in the future with show everything clearly and they will push your skill levels so high

Thank you so much! Actually, I'm not really a painter and I'm a very beginner concerning colors! And I have no pad to work with so I try to do the best with the basis of P.Shop! I see now that painting is not the same as coloring!! x( Β But it really interested me so thank you again very much for your precious precise answer! Sure it will help me! The guidance of a master is always good to take! I can not wait to try...
