And in thirty seconds, Republicans will be ripping apart this statement and making fun of it.

So what happens if you turn out to be one of several potential fathers for the child? Does that make the mom less of a woman?

I don't think this statement is about how many partners you have. Rather whether or not you are willing to take responsibility for the child. The woman gets pregnant, a man doesn't. Also I think it also addresses men not stepping up to the plate when it is their child.

So a mother who behaves irresponsibly by being unable to tell who the father is is given a free pass for whatever decision she makes, but the man is given no say and held to full accountability for whatever decision she makes? Doesn't exactly sound like we're encouraging women to be too responsible.
Perhaps he didn't want a child. Perhaps she said she was on the pill because she wanted a baby and didn't care about what he had to say. Besides, it's not like he's actually allowed to be with the child anyway. All "stepping up" means is that he either pays child support for a kid that may not even be his, or he goes to debtor's prison.

The Mom should get a paternity test to make sure she has the right guy & she should keep track of who she has sex with (so should the guy). Anyone who has sex regardless on whether or not birth control was used must always realize that pregnancy (& possible STD's)is always a risk.

Why should she care who it is when she gets paid no matter what? The guy is the one who should want the test because, the way laws work now, once he starts paying, proof that he has no connection to the child at all can not be used to justify an end to payments. This money, with no guarantee that a penny of it will be used on the child, passing through the hands of lawyers is more important to the state than the wellbeing of the child; which surpisingly always seems to mesh with whatever the woman decides is best. If she decided that the man she married and had kids with is no longer good enough, she can kick him out through no fault divorce and use the state to squeeze every last penny he has. [link]

It's an imperfect solution & yes the guy may get stiffed but no one forced him to have sex. At least he doesn't have to carry the child for nine months then give birth to it. It does take two to tango and both must assume the risks if the sex was consensual.

No, but they did force him to go to jail after he was unable to pay. Which is odd because I thought we abolished debtor's prison 200 years ago. And once there, he's basically there forever because his bills aren't suspended while he's locked up. Once he comes out, he has only so much time to pay for all the bills he missed. And now he's got a criminal record which considerably hinders his ability to find a new job. He may have been able to pay, but unfortunately his drivers license and business license were taken away. He's expected to go to work after they've taken his right to drive.
Then there's another fun scenario where the mom has the baby but doesn't tell the dad, thinking she can handle is herself. Well it's years later and she's decided it's all too much and that he needs to not only start paying, but fork over back child support payments for all the years he missed. Meanwhile, he's moved on with his life and now has a family and children of his own. But to hell with their needs. The one night stand he forever regrets wants money and the state is willing and able to help, provided they get their cut.
And yet, women have the option to abort. They can choose to take no responsibility at all. Women can also choose to put the kid up for adoption, again without any consideration for what the dad might want. Are men given any equivalent, such as financial abortion where they can legally renounce all rights and obligations to the child in the same way a woman does when she puts it up for adoption? Of course not. How would the family court system be able to steal his money that way?
And I like how you brought up the consensual. Because in this country, if a woman rapes a man (or in this case an underage boy) and gets pregnant, her rape victim has to pay her child support. Leaving the child with a known rapist and forcing a victimized minor to pay up is all done, ironically enough, in the best interests of the child. [link]

True, but what Obama I believe was saying was the actual physical helping raising the child. And what about the guy who has multiple children and refuses to do anything about that. A lot of men are only interested in getting laid & to hell with the consequences so you might think about that also. Men can be just as bad as the women you are bashing about.

Then how come there are no efforts to put in place shared custody laws? If having the father around were so benificial to the child, which it is [link] then there should be a default of shared custody after divorce as opposed to the current win/lose system in which women almost always win with the help of a biased court system.
He's a douche bag. Also, why are so many women "riding it raw" with a man they have no reason to believe will make a good father. Casual sex is one thing, but as the only group with reproductive rights, women have a responsibility to ensure that their baby daddy is going to stick around BEFORE getting pregnant. Women are just as much as fault for this problem as men.
I know there are bad men out there. And if women made a bit more effort to take responsibility for their actions, those bad men wouldn't be fathering so many bastard children.

Probably because Men made the laws in the first place. Also those bad men wouldn't be fathering so many bastard children how about condoms. It seems to me that you are putting most if not All the blame on women & men are the victims.

And men make those laws at the request of women.
Women aren't being sent to debtor's prisons because they failed to pay for a child that they didn't want and probably isn't even theirs. It's hard for me not to see the suffering of men, because everyone else treats it as though its business as usual.
