Description A moon mirroring stone miniature pagoda in West Lake, Hangzhou

Wiki: [link]
-----
Nikon D80 + 70-300mm VR Nikkor. Crop. Lightened midtones in tone editing to brighten the photo. Minor noise reduction.
-----
I'm not sure if the 70-300mm VR Nikkor just has poor contrast or if West Lake was just too foggy (or smoggy) that day (or maybe both) but most of my other shots from West Lake of pagodas more than 20 feet from my camera came out extremely faded

HOMG.

That's the city I was born in.

I love the calm and serene feeling to it. That lake is beautiful to walk by at night.

I've had experience with that lens in particular. It seems that the poor contrast is caused by excessive ambient humidity.

A co-worker and I have differing opinions as to whether its moisture between the glass elements or on them, but whatever the case its moisture thats sapping your contrast.

With that said theres little that can be done except for leaving the area

Yes that's very possible. I don't think I've had such a problem when shooting in the states.

Now that's a composition. Blurry leaves on the foreground, interesting subject in focus and faded mountains behind. NICE!

I soooooooo in love with this it look so peaceful a definite feeling of Chinese

Is the 70-300mm VR nikkor lens easy to use ??? I see they sell these kind of lens in the store near my house and it turn out to be so big and really heavy

JeanFan In reply to BlackJack0919 [2009-07-08 09:27:04 +0000 UTC]

Hehe thanks

The 70-300mm VR Nikkor is definitely my heaviest and biggest lens, but the weight and size issue really doesn't bother me. It's quite small compared to say the more expensive 80-200mm or other dedicated telephotos. It's a bit slower than I would like. It is fairly soft at 300mm, but you can easily compensate by taking a photo at 250mm and then crop. It's a lot sharper than my 55-200mm Nikkor. I admit I don't use it often but I always keep it in my backpack just in case. I'm more of a wide-angle kind of person. But if you're looking for a dedicated telephoto, this lens is pretty good and quite a bargain when you get it used (I got mine for around 350). If you don't think you'll be using a telephoto often, don't like to change lenses every few minutes, and don't mind softer images, I'd suggest one of those do-it-all zooms by Tamron that go from like 14mm to 300mm and are freakishly small and light.

well , as long as I was questioning I want to ask you something about the Kit lens they sell together with the camera . When you take photo with Bokeh , can the Kit lens make bokeh too ??? And , a DSLR camera don't have zoom function and can only zoom with the lens , right ??

thank you for reading

JeanFan In reply to BlackJack0919 [2009-07-10 16:33:52 +0000 UTC]

I'm not sure which Kit lenses they provide now. Some kits provide two lenses, generally the 18-55mm and a 55-200mm. Others provide only one, generally the 18-135mm. And some kits I see now provide a 70-300mm lens.

The photos in my gallery with bokeh were taken using the 50mm F1.8. This is generally not a kit lens and must be purchased separately for about $100. I have a tutorial on my website on Focus and Bokeh [link] So see if that helps. I've never been able to do portrait bokeh photos with my kit lenses. All lenses can do bokeh by simply unfocusing. But I assume you want an object or person focused in the foreground and then blurry bokeh in the background. For that you would need a lens like the 50mm F1.8 or F1.4.

A DSLR camera's zoom is in the zoom lens I guess. Some lenses like the 50mm F1.8 is a prime lens so it's a fixed focal length and can't zoom.

Love this picture (and all of your China photos). I just went to China for a study abroad from April to May and we visited Hangzhou--as well as Xi'an, Beijing and Shanghai (with a day trip to Xitang).
This is so nostalgic since I took a similar picture! : )

If you would like, feel free to check out my gallery as I am currently uploading some of my photos as well.
Keep up the good work!

I love this shot.
I really liked that you made it black and white- it just seems to fit the picture.
Also, not sure if this is intentional, but I love the blurry leaves at the side compared to the crisp image of um. that...(don't know the name) thing on the lake.
xD
(pagoda is it?)

This whole image just leaks out a peaceful and serene feeling.

Great job!
