Description Raudan valmistusta muinaiseen tapaan.

Making of the iron oldschool way and forging the knife from it.

1-2. Rautamalmin etsintää ja keräämistä joen pohjasta.

Searching and collecting the bog iron ore from the bottom of the river.

3. Malmin puhdistamista polttamalla, eli pasuttaminen

Cleaning the iron ore by burning it.

4. Pasutettua malmia, noin 4kg

Burned iron ore, there's about 4 kg of it.

5-6. Sulatukseen tarvittavat aineet: malmi, kalkkia ja puuhiiltä.

Materials needed in the melting: iron ore, lime and wood charcoal.

7. Sulatus käynnissä. Masuuni on tehty pääasiassa vuolukivipaloista ja savesta.

Melting ongoing. Furnace is made mostly from soapstone blocks and clay.

8. Näkymä masuuniin sulatuksen loppuvaiheessa.

View to the furnace at end of the melting.

9. Purettu masuuni

decrypted furnace.

10. Möhkäle jossa on sekaisin kuonaa ja rautaa. Jokin meni sulatuksessa hieman vikaan, koska rauta ja kuona eivät olleet erillisinä möykkyinä vaan täysin sekaisin.

Lump that contains slag and iron. Something gone bit wrong in melting as the iron and slag were mixed in one lump, instead of two lumps where one contains mainly iron and another the slag.

11. Rauta (vasemmalla) eroteltuna kuonasta.

Iron (on the left) separated from slag.

12. Poikkileikkaus rautapalasta

Crosscut of the iron piece.

13. Litteämmiksi taottuja rautapaloja. Palat kootaan pakaksi joka sitten ahjohitsataan yhtenäiseksi.

Iron pieces that are forged flatter. These are put together by forge welding.

14. Rautapala joka on taiteltu kaksinkerroin. Jotta raudasta saataisiin tasalaatuista, tulee sitä taitella kaksinkerroin ja ahjohitsata taas yhtenäiseksi, lukuisia kertoja.

Folded piece of iron. The iron piece must be folded and forge welded solid again many times. That makes the iron piece more homogeneous and condensed.

15. Rautapalan talttaaminen kahtia, jotta kaksinkerroin taittelu onnistuu.

Chiseling the iron piece, so that it can be folded again.

16. Palasta alkaa muotoutua puukonterä

Knife blade is starting to take shape.

17-18. Kolmen päivän homman päätteeksi: valmiiksi taottu, karkaistu, päästetty ja kiillotettu puukonterä paikallisesta järvimalmista.

After three days of work: finished knife blade made from the local iron ore.

Some of those pictures are taken by She also assisted me in this project.

Edit 27.2.2014

Toiselle samalla kertaa tekemälleni puukonterälle tehtiin analyysi. Terän hiilipitoisuus oli noin 0,531%. Näytteet otettiin kahdesta kohtaa terän keskeltä.

Analysis was made for another blade I made at same time, from same iron. Its carbon content is about 0,531%

What did you use to sharpen it? Was it old school or a grinder?

I roughly sharpened it with large diameter grinding wheel, basically similar as those used for centuries but electric powered. Finishing is done by hand with several fine abrasive papers and whetstone.

I stumbled upon this image on reddit, and let me tell you; it has been the single best reference image I have found in all the images I've been collecting for a fantasy story/world I'm working on.  Thank you so much for sharing!

Very inspiring!
I must find the time to try something like this.

Much easier for me where i live in germany as i can start at number 13 or 14. This is because what i pull out of the river is not just iron ore, it is already iron and steel. Bicycles, shopping trolleys, dustbins,

How can you tell that there are iron ores in the river? Were they flushed from upper streams like gold?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

jarkko1 In reply to lalalalaX4 [2015-03-28 06:59:23 +0000 UTC]

Well, the heritage pretty much tells which areas have ore in waters, and when searching it its easy to just tap the bottom with oar and when it feels that there is ore, then try to get some up. The iron flushes into water from soil and it then starts to accumulate into suitable places.

Thanks for the Info. This certainly cannot be done in my home country, because It's too small and over-exploited by colonizers. You are very lucky to have such an abundant homeland.

Minun on syksyllä tarkoitus tulla käymään Otsolassa. Varmaan otan mukaan jotain esiteltävääkin.
