Whoa, this comment is almost exactly a year old. My apologies for such a late response!
It's a very nice museum. When you get off the train station in Mitaka, you have the option of taking a shuttle to the museum or walking. My friend and I elected to walk and it was well worth it. The area is wooded with a stream flowing along the path and it felt a little like walking through a Ghibli film.
As you approach the museum, there's a Totoro in a ticket booth. The actual entrance is a little past that and they exchange your ticket for a snippet of film.
Inside there are several rooms: one devoted to animation, another to storyboarding. No photography is allowed inside though, but you can purchase postcards that are pictures of the museum. Outdoor photography is allowed though, which is how I got the picture of Laputa. 
They have other things too--a giant plus neko bus where kids can play. There's also a cafe and if you order a cappuccino, they'll do draw ghibli inspired art into the foam.

first half of comment wow lovely if i go there i will remember to walk thank you ^^ with a bit of research already new there was a totoro but thanks for saying ^^ and the ticket thing aswell what film did you see by the way? second half must purchase postcard! so is the cafe outside can you take photos in their? must take photo with robot soldier i love that movie! did you get a cappu? if so what inspired art did you get? did you have any other food? i saw someone had a burger on da it had a little flag in it id take taht home with me ^^

They showed Looking for a Home the day we were there. We didn't have lunch or drinks from the cafe due to the long line, unfortunately. It was very crowded so we wandered up to the roof where I took the picture of Laputa.

this is so awesome! i just watched Laputa: Castle in the Sky for the umpteenth time, it's definitely one of my absolute fave Ghibli films, this looks so epic though i'll have to visit it one day

Used to walk past this every day. Its between my brother's flat and the railway station, even if this was on the roof, it was nice to see - and the Totoro in the ticket booth outside.

That's cool! My friend and I walked around the area after visiting the museum. It was a very nice place to walk at that time (early april) with flowers in bloom along the way.

Aww, I hope you can someday! It's a cool place. Beware of the gift shop though--it's a mass of people buying the Ghibli the goods.

Indeed it was! Howl's Moving Castle was popular at the time so the shop was full of movie-related items. I got a Calcifer charm for my DS.
