Nocturne grew up in Rustboro City, where he lives with his stay-at-home dad. His mom, however, is a gym leader in a different region. Since Nocturne's home was only male-populated (himself, his dad, and his younger brother) he’s never felt comfortable around women. Also, the lack of seeing his mom contributes to Nocturne's negative feelings. This led to Nocturne acting especially cold to other females, due to his perception that women were quick to abandon their responsibilities once they've reached a certain status. If becoming a Pokemon trainer, eventually leading up to becoming a gym leader, meant to abandon important familial relationships, Nocturne didn’t want part in that. He was never interested in becoming a trainer either. Instead, he listened to a lot of music, and eventually, learned how to compose music on his own.

When Nocturne was 12, he often went on solitary walks around Rustboro and its surrounding area, listening to music with his newly gifted headphones he received from his father. That’s when he comes across a cowering whismur following him in the tunnel. Nocturne felt a strange connection with the whismur. He’d come across a lot of pokemon, especially wailing whismurs, in the past but this particular whismur was different, most of them would run away from him. Nocturne's curiosity instantly piqued, thinking this whismur was particularly special. Since it kept following him around, it wasn’t difficult for him to catch at all, especially since he didn’t carry pokeballs with him at the time.

Fast forward a year later, at age 13, Nocturne gains some motivation to start wanting to become a pokemon trainer, only because of his captured whismur. However, he is slightly afraid of becoming too invested and end up like his mother, which he didn't want to be. Nocturne isn’t completely set on the goal and declares he wouldn't pursue it until he is able to beat Roxanne’s gym. Within that same year, a family unexpectedly moves in next door, and that's when Nocturne meets their daughter, Blitz. Blitz was already a Pokemon trainer herself. She was a few years older than Nocturne, but also incredulously short, which Nocturne found ironic. At first, Nocturne wanted to avoid her, because he still has not held an actual conversation with a female besides for the few old lady cashiers at the PokemonMart. However Blitz was a very curious and nosey girl, so when she sees Nocturne being in solitude most of the time, she couldn’t help but approach him herself. Nocturne is very startled by her sudden appearances since he’s never really interacted with a girl around his age before. His hostility and shyness tones down eventually once he gets used to speaking to Blitz. It was through subtle convincing, and temporary local traveling from Blitz that Nocturne was able to acquire and level up a few Pokemon in order to beat Roxanne’s gym.
