Description I painted this last summer (2010) but didn't get round to uploading it. I saw this beautiful photo as an advert for a fragrance called Ghost and I just had to paint it.

For a while I've been calling it "ghost girl" in my head (because of the advert) and when I went to upload it just now I was trying to think of a title and I thought that actually she seems somewhat ethereal so I decided to go with Ghost Girl.

If she was faintly transparent it would make sense with the title. Anyway I still like it.

Itti this is so beautiful. I always love seeing traditional works here on deviantart, I'm sure I've told you that before. There's just something so inviting and beautiful about traditional art that makes it stand apart from digital. And I love seeing traditional work from you in particular, because you are improving all the time, and you have such a unique style about your paintings and drawings.

One thing in particular that really makes this stand out to me is the clear and visible brush strokes. I really like how they don't entirely blend together, but at the same time they do. It gives the painting of a girl (something that has been painted many times before) a unique flare to it, making it stand apart from other paintings of the same topic. Specifically I like the brush strokes on the archway, such as the way swirl around. I also like the texture you've used in the plants and trees, and the ruffles in her dress. I like how the steps are so smooth and then the plants are thicker and have more texture. The white highlights add an emblematic touch too, I like it. But really, those steps are amazing. They have a great 3d like look to them, and they help create a convincing setting, with a vanishing point and all.

I really like the way you did the girls eyebrows. So many times people use a dark color when drawing or painting eyebrows, even if the person they're creating has lighter hair. Her eyes and lips are lovely. I love the tiny details like the eyeliner and the gloss on her ruby lips. I also really like how her red curly hair stands out so much against the rich emerald green of her dress.

Something I get a bit of a kick out of is that the girl's facial features remind me of your own. It doesn't look like a self portrait, but I can see you still the same when looking at the girl. I always like finding details like that in people's art, it's a subconscious thing a lot of artists do (myself included). It's like the artwork is an offspring of your mind and heart, and by putting so much of you in it this inadvertently happens. I hope my musings make sense. At any rate I love it.

There really isn't a lot I would recommend as far as critique on this, what with the specific style this is in and such. It all looks to fit in together very nicely. Just a few details that could use some minor tweaking. Something that does stand out to me is the black shading on her lower back and arm furthest from us. Her skin is so fair and smooth, and the blackness really looks out of place and rough. I'd suggest using something that would fit on her color palette a bit softer, such as brown or even purple to get that proper shading in there. Something else that could use a little help is the area by the corner of her jaw. I feel like there should be an ear there, but it's just... well I'm not sure what it is. Maybe too much skin? There's a small space that doesn't look like skin or hair, but smudges instead. I think for future reference just covering that up with the hair will improve it. Whenever I'm having troubles like that hair is a great way to hide little mistakes. The last thing that I notice upon looking at this further is the way her arm and her wrist join together. At first it looks like there is a chunk taken out of her wrist, but then I think that it's the dress covering it. To make that translate better that yes, the dress is covering her wrist, I'd concentrate on defining that one particular ruffle in the dress, and maybe make the dark green line define the top of it to extend the flow from it covering the hand. I really hope that made sense.

But really these are just small little details that I would change. The piece over all is lovely and something to be proud of. Fantastic work!

I like her dress and the colours. You gotta love that flaming red hair flying about her face.. She looks like she has somewhere to go, and if you're going to follow her, you'd better make up your mind because she isn't going to wait. Her face seems quite round, however. Was that the model, or just an adaption of yours.

It's Lily Cole, who does have quite a round face. [link]

I love your interpretation. You're right, there is something almost defiant about her pose - she's not going to stick around whilst you dawdle!

Thanks for the comment

There's definitely something mystical about the scene. It makes me wonder where she's going!
