thanks so much - this was a D100. I've now replaced it with the Nikon D300 which I find a lot better

Again, you seem to have found something beautiful where most people wouldn't think to look. I LOVE the way the rays fan out in the distance, rather than just shining down from a single direction. The gate and the pier lend an element of worry to this image; it makes me feel that this might not be the safest neighborhood. That in turn makes finding something so pretty that much more meaningful.
The tides here must be powerful; they remind me of Nova Scotia's tides, which is one of the places in the world with the largest variance between high and low tides. Low tide there created some pretty otherworldly scenes - I remember seeing boats literally hanging at the docks by their ropes over a tiny little harbor that was bone-dry.

that sounds like a really interesting place to visit. The place in this shot has a double high tide every day - it's in a harbour

Oh yes. There are inlets there that are filled by high tide - so when the low tide's out, and the high tide starts coming in again, the water flowing out clashes with the rising tide and this wave of turbulence flows into the channel and just grinds its way all the way through - it's called a 'tidal bore'.
While it's interesting to imagine, and some do get quite big, it's aptyl named, too - it is quite a bore to watch.
You should visit that place if you ever get the chance. Many explorers familiar with the entire world mark it as one of the most beautiful places of all, and I'd love to see what kinds of pictures you could make out of that place.
