After his beloved Elissa spared Loghain life, Alistair felt betrayed and he left. He staid in Denerim some time, and when Darkspawns attacked city he fight to defence harbour.
He took last ship living burning Denerim.

When I spared Loghain, Alistair got mad, and left my Elissa with all that mess on her head. He had to run away to Free Marches because I found him in DA2 in Hang Men, drunk and pathetic.

Aw, no! The poor baby..... I don't know which is better.... I think I would have wanted him to live, but he didn't want to because then I'd be dead and he would be king. (Not that I chose him to be king, I chose Anora.)

In my case it was simple. Elissa made Alistair a king, she betrothed him with Anora, she used Zev to heal her broken heart and refused Morrigan offer. In a last battle I left Alistair by the Denerim`s Gate and my Grey Warden died on top of the Fort Drakon`s roof leaving her assassin mourning.

Zevran held Soren (my person) back when she tried to run after Alistair. Plus, that doesn't sound easy to me. I had wanted to get Alistair to fall in love with her since the first I saw him and so it probably would have killed me inside to do that even more then him dying did.
