Description The general layout of this one was inspired by a Mandarin Duck pattern by Lezard Cheung.

The unicorn is all mine.

I hope to get some pics of this one with the paste off in a day or two... (remind me! )

what does the otherside look like? or did you only slightly wrap around your hand and not the whole way around?

Wow, this was a long time ago. I'm sorry; I am really bad at remembering to check DA! ... But it only went slightly around my hand. I love your version of it, with the Om and the sparkles, and I'm so glad you had fun with it!!

I love this really cool and cute. Do have a question though. I don't know what henna is, so could you tell me what you mean by 'when the paste is off'?

And do you have a recipe for henna? How do you apply it?

Thanks

Thank you so much for the kind compliment! Henna goes on like in this picture - as a paste - you leave the paste on for a while, and when the paste dries out and falls off it leaves a stain on the skin that can last anywhere from a week to a month. I think I missed getting pictures of this one in the 'stain' state, though. :<

You can find lots of great info on henna here: [link]

I tend to like simple recipes; I've found that you can really get a decent stain with just hot water and henna powder - mostly I stick with henna powder, fresh lemon or lime juice (from what I've seen, and some people may argue, but it seems to me that the citric acid seems to prolong the stain, but have a slight affect on how dark it gets - I've seen darker stains with just water, but they don't last as long), sugar or honey, and an essential oil or two (lavender and tea tree are my favorites). I have applied the paste with just regular plastic baggies (cut a teeny tiny hole in the corner and squeeze it out), rolled cones, and jacquard bottles - my current favorite way though, is carrot bags with interchangeable tips (just like you would use for icing a cake!).

Cool. Thanks. Now I just have to learn where to buy this henna stuff. Is it expensive? Do you buy yours online? I've faved an ebayer who has some 'kits' but they seem expensive.

inkeyling In reply to LadyGrimbones [2008-12-07 02:17:35 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, it shouldn't be too expensive - lately I've been buying from a local Indian grocer, and can buy a box of the powder for less than $3.00. After that it's just the cost of the limes, and the essential oils (which can be expensive, but they go a long way)! If you don't have an Indian grocer nearby, the site I linked to above does sell henna at a fairly reasonable cost - about on par with most of what I have seen online.

I did try one kit once from a bookstore - it was actually a horrible experience - you have to watch, because henna does expire (something you actually have to watch in an Indian grocer, also - I only ever buy boxes that are marked with an expiration date - not all are). I swear the henna that they included was years past the expiration date - but the worst thing that happens is that you'll get a very light stain or none at all, so really it's just disappointing.

"experation dates"

Thanks for that one, I wouldn't have thought of that but it does make sense.

And one more question, please. What is this 'color' Henna that I've seen pictures of on da? Is this real henna or just some body paint used as a compliment to henna tattoos?

Thanks for your help.

inkeyling In reply to LadyGrimbones [2008-12-07 08:22:53 +0000 UTC]

Hmmmm, I haven't seen those! As far as I am aware, henna is always brown - the stain can vary from an orange-red shade to a very dark brown shade, but it is always some shade of brown. There are other dyes that people sometimes use, also on that site I posted they talk about indigo (blue) and Persian gold (yellow) - I have tried Persian gold (turmeric), and it works but doesn't have the staying power that henna does. "Gilding" is also popular - that's using various body paints and glitters and fancy things to compliment the henna.

Any time, it's a lot of fun and I hope you enjoy it!

do you draw on yourself with normal pen then but the henna on it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

inkeyling In reply to Obsessing-Red-Rum [2008-12-07 01:54:40 +0000 UTC]

No, not for this one. Sometimes I do that, if it's something I want to get even, like knotwork - but most of the time I just go at it with the henna. It's temporary anyway
