Tailspin, Animaniacs and Batman Animated - the best TV cartoons bar none - EVER.
And some episodes of Freakazoid.
Older TV cartoon shows did have SOME charm sometimes and in some rare cases extremelly well done design etc.
But 90`s were the last roar from the savannah for good quality TV cartoons.

It`s NOT the kids.
It`s the animation execs. The [in]famous John Kricfalusi [of Ren & Stimpy fame] has said that those 'suits' in charge of the animation production actually HATE creativity, especially cartoonists. Many a TV show today`s created by a commitee[s] and in many cases person[s] without any ability to draw 'designs' what is to be drawn and animated and that`s how we have these modern abominations on our TV screens.
At least in the old days creative people were respected and allowed to be creative and deliver beauty.
First the so-called 'modern art' has started to pollute fine arts and paintings, now the 'uglyisation' of cartoons is happening and I`ve seen some 'alternative' comics getting the 'uglyfying' treatment.
Scary.

It's really sad. You don't really even seen 'drawn' art in cartoons anymore verse computer drawn which is very unsettling. Creativity is being snuffed out

i WOULDN`T GO THAT FAR... after seeing THE INCREDIBLES, then MEGAMIND and TANGLED... I`m willing to accept that there is some hope for creativity even in computer-generated features.
But that`s the case with these projects because they were based IN STRONG DRAUGHTSMANSHIP and pencils on paper have defined the design, characters and everything. Computer is used strictly AS THE TOOL, not as the goal.
There is hope -- they`ve reopened classical animation depatrments and I`m sure things will settle with positive balance between digital and analogue.

Oh, I don't think all computer animation is a bad thing. I just mean ALL of it being computer animated is a bad thing. Things just become too conformed to the same basic styles verses a unique artists pencils

Gotcha.
But in the case of TANGLED/Rapuntzel they`ve gone the whole 9,000 yards and beyond, PRESERVING in the computer 3D the look of Glen Keane`s pencils!!! Like with INCREDIBLES where they`ve respected the initial 2D pencil-on-paper designs - and then it starts to make sense.

Oh it is a lot better than it was, and it's getting better all the time. It's not that I don't appreciate the art form, it's just I don't want the other to totally disappear either you know?

Exactly my sentiments... I felt rage when I lived in the UK and learned that they`ve let go several hundred animators and assistatns who`ve worked on classical, pencil on paper hand-drawn animation because - as execs say - 'kids nowadays want it all to be CGI'.
No.
Kids and grown-ups want GOOD STORY and GOOD CHARACTERS and you don`t send to the unemployment queues classically trained musicians because todays` keyboards can reproduce any sound, classical instruments included. I mean, can a master keyboardist or two substitute the philharmonic orchestra?!? OF COURSE THEY CAN but that`s beyond the point.
You don`t dismiss oil on canvas, tempera on cardboard, charcoal on paper or cello and violin and church organ because it can be done digitally with fewer button pushing with magnifficent results!
The other night I`ve recorded a song -- my tune that I`ve written even lyrics for and I played ALL the instruments save the preprogrammed drums. Guitar, bass and keyboards sounding heavenly. I could have synthesized guitars and bass on the keyboard too but no, I wanted the authentic analogue 'thump' - and it sounds like a band is grooving. That`s where I loved the MIDI technology but I hate the prospect that maybe sax players are going to become extinct because you can get Wayne Shorter sound with the right keyboard manipulation.
Co-existence is the keyword, not dismissal of what was before.
Sorry for the rant.

For some odd reason, I wanted him to ravish Rebecca Cunningham. *shrug* I don't know why...
