Oh, it starts to, but then life's little technicalities get in the way.
As accepting as comic book guy (his name's Aaron) is of the supernatural, he doesn't particularly care to get bitten. It honestly creeps him out. Aaron isn't particularly fond of needles or blood in general, and though it's not a big enough phobia to keep him from going to the doctor, he doesn't want bloodletting involved in his romantic life.
Sadly for our half-breed vampire friend (Avery), she's enough of a vampire to want it. It's hard for her to be intimate without getting a little nippy, a problem that has ruined many relationships in the past.
So despite several attempts at having a nice, (relatively) normal romance with Aaron, incompatible wants keep pushing them back into the friendship zone. It's not until after much craziness and practically 3 books of events that Aaron finally comes around. He does love her, and eventually gets over the biting thing.
My vampire universe doesn't go by the "you get bit, you get turned" rule, so that's not the issue. (Always thought that version of vampirism would lead to overpopulation problems or an excessive number of corpses that would eventually expose vampires to the police.) I go with a variation of "you drink a vampire's blood, you might just get turned." Avery isn't enough of a vampire to turn anyone, even if they did drink her blood.
