Description yes, its paint, not photoshop.

me and hope were inspired by the Wii game Okami, and for those who have every played it know how it is a colorful and wonderfully executed work of art and not some video game. Since Okami referenced japanese culture and history, i decided to look to the same place as well.
In japanese, basically, "oni" means "demon" and is usualy characterized by blue or red skin, tiger loins, and horns. Well, the background has faint tiger print and heather and hope are red and blue. The horns i made looked poopy, so no horns.
What made me choose to reference "oni" was because in the game Okami, one of the demons you fight are these bull ogres who are blue and red skinned. I decided to take this demonic vibe and the beautiful aesthetics of Okami and create a photoshoot based on the japanese culture and history.

so we started at 9am and ended at 6pm. I hand made the petals and hope and heather styled the wigs, cause they be good at that

Dude this is AWESOME.
This shot, like the game, looks like a paint come to life.
Made me remind of Hanafuda, a manga by Okama who has two Oni you can see on this link [link]

One of my favorite Manga and game put together on one of my favorite artistic media.

An EPIC job!

one of my friends went to brazil as a transfer student. when she got back, i talked to one of her new friends on Skype and that was really awesome. I don't speak Portuguese, so it was kinda difficult to have a conversation. haha! i am from the dallas/forth worth area in Texas

igaboo In reply to PennyLan3 [2010-06-02 17:56:36 +0000 UTC]

it was actually a pain to get it on, getting it off was easy. It was strange how the red went on really smoothly and the blue was very cakey and flaked off easily. The blue was really difficult, i'm sure it has something to do with the chemical make up or something like that as to why it was so difficult to apply

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PennyLan3 In reply to igaboo [2010-06-07 17:41:21 +0000 UTC]

I've never tried anything with actual paint... only sharpies uhauhauh and my friends wanted to kill me because it took like 4 showers to get it off huahuahua....
Were both paints new? Because if they were it was probably a chemical something about them...

igaboo In reply to PennyLan3 [2010-06-07 21:38:16 +0000 UTC]

oh, my bad, it is makeup from M.A.C. called "chromacake". its a cake like pigment made for body painting. you can't order it online, as they only sell it in MACpro stores., of which there is about 10ish throughout the US. I live in the DFW area so its right down the street for me. However, if you don't live near a pro-store, you can call one up and have them ship it to you. They are about $20. I am sure there are other alternatives that work just as well as the chroma cake, but I haven't run across any. I've tried the crappy halloween paint, baby powder, powered pigment, hoblob crayola paint that is safe for skin (which means its shitty for painting skin), powdered paint that you add water to to create the liquid paint, none met my standards of what i wanted. The chromacake might be more expensive than all the other alternatives i've mentioned/tried, but serisouly, pay the extra money cause your photos will look great and your models will love you for not having to shower four times to get it off, lol!

Well, Im not sure if I will find that specific makeup here in Brasil in a reasonable price... BUT that is what internet is for right?
I've tried the baby powder with some sucess once to make my friend look white... But my usual alternative are always sharpies huahuahua
Thank you so much for the tips!

one of my friends went to brazil as a transfer student and when she came back home, we talked to her new boyfriend at the time via Skype. However, he spoke portuguese and none of us did except her, so the conversation was difficult, haha! but it was really interesting to talk to someone else from a different country. Me, I am from the Dallas/Fort Worth area in Texas!

PennyLan3 In reply to igaboo [2010-07-01 16:45:13 +0000 UTC]

yeah, I know how that is, my friend used to go to the international school here in brasil, and I ended up having to learn english otherwise I would be that annoying person asking everyone to translate (most of them spoke portuguese, but english came easier )
Where did your friend lived here do you know?
Texas? that's cool! i always wanted to go there

igaboo In reply to PennyLan3 [2010-07-01 17:28:28 +0000 UTC]

haha, i'm glad you wanna come to Texas! i'm always afraid that people are going to hate Texas because of Bush. I think my friend lived in Aracatuba? On her the brazil facebook album it says that aracatuba is the location. How did english come easier for you? I've always heard that english was a difficult language to learn, but i think any launguage is hard to learn. (i'm learning beginning spanish right now)

PennyLan3 In reply to igaboo [2010-07-02 01:26:42 +0000 UTC]

Oh well... I don't think i'd stop wanting to go someplace new because one or another person is from there... And I always see texas in movies and stuff, so im curious to go!
Ahhh I know where it is, it's in my state, like 5 or 6 hours aways from where I live
Well, my friend kinda forced me to talk in english with her and corrected me when I messed it up, and I started reading in english bc I couldn't stand her telling the Harry Potter books before the translation came up hahuauha but aside from some sounds like "world" or learning to not say the word "beach" wrong, I never had major problems with english, I always liked learning languages, and the grammar is pretty easy compared with what I had to endure with portuguese uhauhahua
Spanish? that's cool! I had it in school also... Now im learning italian

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

igaboo In reply to PennyLan3 [2010-07-03 19:42:10 +0000 UTC]

you should like, be a translator or something. how many languages do you know? lol! I think its great that your bilingual i wish i could learn italian, it seems like a very beautiful language. I'm glad that you didn't have too many issues with the english language! And texas is a lot like the movies, but at the same time nothing like the movies. Like, we have a country essence, but we are modern. I only say this because when my parents used to live in germany like, 30 years ago, all the germans thought that all people in texas only road horses and wore cowboy hats. lol! it made me happy and chuckle

red+blue is my favorite color combination. pretty great!
just the eyes could be more real! they are a little to much enhanced and changed by photoshop so that the "natural", lively and liquid look disappeared. still love it! always wanted ot make something like this

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

igaboo In reply to Michelle-Fennel [2010-06-01 21:27:10 +0000 UTC]

i agree that they eyes should be fixed. during my internship i had, that was one of the comments made to improve, so since this photo I have tried to have realistic eyes, not over editing them, but just enough to make them naturally pop. things that scream photoshop are buh. haha!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Michelle-Fennel In reply to igaboo [2010-06-01 21:38:17 +0000 UTC]

you can fix them and change the photograph here. (just reupload it - you don'T even need to mention that you changed something because it's a minor improvment which just makes it even better) your works are great...please continue doing what you are doing.
