Description Yay another Narutard art! *crickets chirp*

So I learned this guy's "birthday" was Jan. 25. I missed it!
Ah well, it's almost embarassing to show you this since I wasn't even going to submit it at first. I just wanted to play with a different style (full of mistakes too!), and Yondaime is one of my fave characters!

Oooo! I like the style--it's like real life! And the text is pretty BA itself. Very nicely done!

The hair is what started it all. Thank ya Silje - and I can see you doing something like this with your skills.

Oh, wow!! This is more realistic than you usually color! And you did a awesome job!
The mouth and the skin color is the first thing I notice! It might be something weird to notice, though. But omg! I'm sure that if you compared that to a work made by any realistic-artist on dA, or da vinci or something, you would notice that it's 100% realistic!

IcEKoLd In reply to silla-chan [2008-02-02 22:14:06 +0000 UTC]

Na na! Not that realistic, but I do know it's more than what cell shading offers. I've seen some super realism on DA and all I can do is gawk. Someday I will do that kind of work! Yesh! At least I shall strive.

It's interesting to see that the mouth and skin caught your attention first. For me it would've been the eyes. I luff those eyes... Thank you so much for the uber comment Silla-chan!!! You are a bundle of awesomeness.

It's seriously not that good in your eyes?? I think it's really awesome, though. I'm pretty sure that you're close to super realism already. Just look at this, sis. The next picture you upload will sure be awesome, and the one after that might need experts to make sure it's not a photo.

haha.. I might be weird like that. I'm at least not normal. But I understand that you like the eyes too. they're really well colored.
And you can expect me to comment on as many of your pictures as possible.

Oh I think it is good, I just don't judge its "goodness" by comparing it with others works. lol That could be misleading (or depressing). I will keep doing my best though Silla! I hope you do too!

Oh, but you deserve to brag a bit about yourself. and it shouldn't lead you to the depressed side of your mind. You do your best, and that's absolutely visible in every single piece of art you put in your gallery, sis.

I'm doing my best too, but my scanner died, the same happened with the old computer. the technical team worked for hours to save my art, and succeeded. But now I just wonder where in the whole wide world it is. things shouldn't disappear like that.

Aye, I understand what happened to your PC, and I wish I could've been there to help you rather than you relying on someone else you don't know. I always tell my dad "if something happens to the computer, let me fix it!! Don't go to some store and pay them to tell you what's wrong with it!" Unless it's under warranty. So I take it you are not using your pc?

The team worked for hours just to get it back on for some min. and they got most of my files. Hopefully I'll have my art back soon.
And then I can start thinking about uploading new art.
Right now I got a brand new computer. I got it for my birthday. It got Vista though. That's the big bad side with it. no programs works with vista yet, and it's like my computer got a evil AI inplanted or something. X___x''

because we're not ready for this technology. all the fancy glowing buttons and the button layout without any system. Confusing and one gigantic mess.
I wonder how windows are going to fix this one.

Wow! I'm thoroughly impressed with the coloring work here. The shading is so soft but yet so detailed. Was there any line art for this, or did you just paint this? Either way, 'tis astounding!

IcEKoLd In reply to free-energy03 [2008-02-02 05:10:30 +0000 UTC]

Thank you Free, and I'm thrilled that you are impressed! :3 I think I'd still like to add some touches to it. As for the lineart, yes, there was an initial sketch I did. I basically just wanted to play with the hair first, but then the hair was too good for plain ol' cell shading. Talk about experimentation. hah Again, thank ya so much!

IcEKoLd In reply to Streakyferret [2008-02-01 19:28:40 +0000 UTC]

Aww thank ya sweetheart!!!
The hair, I will tell ya, but just know that I did this in Gimp - so you can probably get this done in less layers than I did if you use Photoshop.

1) I used one layer as the "Base Hair" and on top of that, added two more layers, "Hair Light" and "Hair Dark". I think for this one I actually had a couple of those for the different shades of dark. Anyway.
2) I might confuse you in this part, but I saved the Base Hair's selection color to a channel so I could use the selection if I needed it again later. It might be good to ignore that step if it's too confusing.
3) So after that I started adding streaks of light color on one layer and dark streaks on another. Then one layer at a time, I smudged them to make them look natural. This part you can probably do in one layer because Photoshop smudge tool is better than the Gimp's smudge tool in my opinion - when it comes to smudging two different colors.
I also added a little shading with a big sized airbrush in the top center.

Hope that will at least give you an idea of what to do, and hope I didn't scare you away with that.

Nothing to be embarrassed about here! It's very good. Well proportioned. If I had one suggestion (although I'm hardly an authority on colour), it would be to venture into darker shades for the shadows on his face and hair...basically more contrast. On the other hand, the contrast on his clothes is rather good.

IcEKoLd In reply to Oshouki [2008-02-01 16:11:00 +0000 UTC]

Excellent suggestion. I'll see what I can do and if I manage not to screw it up, then I'll update it. Thank you Osh! I'm glad the proportions turned out well too.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Oshouki In reply to IcEKoLd [2008-02-01 18:31:29 +0000 UTC]

Just do your edits on a separate layer or duplicate layer -- then you won't be nervous about screwing it up (which is what usually leads to the screwing up....well, for me at least.) I recommend using the dodge/burn tool to darken and lighten. That way, it won't interfere with the texture quality you already have. Another thing to try that won't require a single brush stroke is to adjust the gamma or the tone curve -- but then it's hard to adjust just a portion of the pic (unless you're really proficient with using masks.)

sorry, I have a tendency to offer unsolicited advice...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

IcEKoLd In reply to Oshouki [2008-02-01 21:59:31 +0000 UTC]

No it's ok! It's great advice and I'm glad you even took the time to write it.
I will definitely fiddle with the gamme and tone curve that you talked about. I haven't done that before and now I really am interested in the difference this will make. I understand about masks in my own way at least. Can't say it's the way everyone else uses it. lol Thank you so much Osh! I'm eager to try this out.
