Excerpt from Airborn:

"Crows Nest" I panted. "Sir, there's an airship headed towards us!"

The airship was small, and I could now see why I had not picked her out earlier. Her skin was painted black, and she carried no running beacons anywhere on her. No light emanated from her control car either. Her side bore no marking, no name or number.

A spotlight flared from it's underside, and I saw ropes springing from its open bay doors and unfurling towards the Aurora

"She's dropping lines onto us!" I shouted into the speaking tube.

Pirates. That's all they could be.

Done as my Summer Reading project for school, which I chose to do on Kenneth Oppel's Airborn. So, I decided I would illustrate a scene or two from the book, here is a Pirate airship, piloted by Szpirglas, a deadly pirate captain, as he attempts to seize the luxury Airship, the Aurora.

This nearly killed my computer, for it was larger than any picture I have ever done on it. Before I merged the file, it had 152 separate layers in photoshop and was somewhere over 40 megabytes in size. Anyway, this was a fun book to read, and quite fun to do a picture of, though doing the perspective on the line-art was hell!

I took a lot of artist's liberty on this, so I'm not overly concerned with it being exactly like the description in the book.

EDIT: Replaced with a non-sepia version. I think it works better on dA.
